Pants vs. Dresses/Skirts

The norm of Christian modesty for women has traditionally been longer skirts and dresses. A modest dress or skirt/top highlights the feminine parts of a woman’s body without being physically distracting to a man.

Let us examine all the images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the MOST PURE ONE, highly favored by God. In all her images, her feminine waist is highlighted, and occasionally we see her rounded belly with the infant God. Her arms are covered, as well as her knees. Usually her head is veiled or crowned, but some images I have seen have her unveiled.

Can anyone imagine our Blessed Mother Mary, our highest example of purity, wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt? Never.

Under the title Our Lady of Good Success, she foretold that in the 20th century fashions would arise that would highly offend our Lord. Can anyone argue this statement today? Young girls become so accustomed to being uncovered except for torso, even babies, no one even questions anymore the idea of modesty for girls and women.

If you read the book Dressing with Dignity, you will find scientific evidence that men have a physical reaction to women wearing pants. Their eyes immediately lower to the area of highest privacy, whether they realize this or not.

Can a dress or skirt be immodest? Certainly. I think an honest look in the mirror will tell you whether or not our Dear Lord would be happy to have you dressed a certain way.
Now let’s examine Jesus’s clothing:mainly robes and sandals.Should me assume that you are wearing such attire not to have the opposite sex’s eyes be drawn to your Vshape torso, or other more private parts of the body? Let’s be fair.

Sorry but that’s just like saying you can’t imagine Abe Lincoln in his suit (and occasional top hat) or George Washington without his signature hairstyle. The Virgin Mary, dress and all, is an entire icon.

Still, that doesn’t mean if we dress them differently, we must do the same with the inside. Please people, can we stop emphasizing too much on something as superficial as appearance?

This is not anything racial, nor immoral, it is a religious. But it is not politically correct, nor according to today’s standards often diplomatic. But it is Catholic so, choose your preference, world’s standards or Church. 🙂
Funny, I guess that means the Pope’s efforts with the Jews would mean his authority is less than that of a saint when he calls for peace between Jews and Christians. Sure, I’ll follow the saint’s example, tainted it may be by just an equally worldly culture and time (just different prejudices).
And no I cannot imagine some of the above, save perhaps a modest traditional Japanese dress, nor should I want to as it would be inappropriate. I am not familiar with Russian folk fashion. 🙂
Actually I’m rather familiar with a few things in Japanese fashion. I doubt you’d imagine the Virgin Mary wearing traditional Japanese dresses like the kimono or the yukata without thinking twice if you’ve seen the things I’ve seen in those outfits.

(name removed by moderator), you wrote: “…I can remember the priest when I was a young man stopping parishioners removing a beggar from the church and bringing the man to the front set of pews and putting him there and telling everyone in the church that he was unworthy as a priest if his parishioners thought it right to remove this man.”

Very good! We are not to condemn others, that would be either detraction or calumny. We can discuss, in an impersonal way, what will protect ourselves and others from scandal, and how to be modest.

Now, the diagrams are just a limited sample, illustrating some principles that apply, at least in areas where pants and skirts are common, but not intended to be complete.

Peggy in Burien, should I add a kilt? It would be similar to the skirt, second from the left, as they are about knee length. The legs are the same length in the samples, although women have shorter legs than men, typically they wear a little higher heel.

I have to wear pants (scrubs, as asexual as you can get) for work, skirts are not practicle. Mass is completely different. Unless there is a rare reason for a need to wear pants to mass, such as attending mass after work and no time to change, I always wear skirts. Mass is the only opportunity I get to do so and about the only time during the week I feel feminine. I’m not one who wears skirts all the time. I like shorts and jeans. During the summer I find skirts hot. I don’t own Daisy Duke shorts (trust me you wouldn’t want to see me in them either :D) and my jeans are loose. I hate tight fitting anything, I enjoy that little thing called breathing. I agree, there are too many men and women who don’t seem to care about their appearences. I went to a NO mass with my mom a while ago and was suprised to see how many people wear jeans to mass!! Even more suprised at the parents who let their daughters wear pjs to mass!! You know, the current trend of wearing pj bottoms as pants, that trend is driving me nuts. I don’t have kids, but I know they wouldn’t think twice of wearing pjs outside of the house. Padre Pio would have a fit if he knew most ladies don’t even wear nylons to church. I would disagree with him on that topic nylons vs tights. I find tights very hot and even more uncomfortable than nylons, and never thought anything could be more uncomfortable than nylons. Plus, tights are hard to find in plus sizes. I would like to see more people in general dressing a little more modestly. Though on the other hand some of the clothing some people wear are very entertaining and make me laugh. :rotfl::bigyikes: I probably commit some sin, but not in the impure thoughts department!!

You know, I think our Lord would be very happy to see us at Mass as often as we could possibly be there and not just on Sundays and HolyDays. Tell me…I am 61, disabled and yet I get out of bed EVERY morning to make 7AM Mass. I also wear nice dress pants…what do YOU think our Lord would rather see… me… making the effort every day…every kind of weather…to attend Mass or would he be saying…“Stay home my child because you have the audacity to wear pants.”

What I think is that a person who can put on pants can put on a skirt and is full of baloney if she says otherwise. 🙂

Well, I guess then that I am full of baloney, because I do not wear skirts and haven’t since high school and dear, that was 43+ years ago.😃 Like I said…I am sure our Lord would be much happier with me in pants attending Mass daily than someone who wears a skirt and attends Sundays only…and could make the effort to go daily.👍

BTW Shin…I looked at your profile and am unable to ascertain as to whether you are a man or a woman…but in any case…why does what I wear…or others like me…bother you and get under your skin so much? Shouldn’t your first thought to be going to Mass and immersing yourself in the wonderful liturgy and what Mass is really all about?

I have seen many posts by your regarding this issue…are you worried I am going to spend eternity in hell because I wear pants?😛 If so, don’t worry, I’m not the least bit concerned.

Shin, I’ll let you into a little feminine secret. Wearing a skirt makes it necessary to wear either tights, or stockings with a belt, both considerably more difficult to pull on than pants and socks…

The lady has said she’s disabled. Perhaps she has a problem balancing. Perhaps her arms aren’t very strong due to a stroke or similar. Perhaps her hips cause her a problem.Cut her some slack!

And don’t be so rude and judgmental.

I am appalled at your unloving attitude and refusal to make allowances.

Perhaps you should cut morality some slack too, and not be so hypocritical in your criticism, doing what you claim to be criticizing. 🙂

I say what I say for love’s sake, and do not assume I am talking to people who’s souls will break and will run off weeping in hurt terror because I say they’re full of baloney. 🙂 And if they did, it would be good for them to stiffen up instead of catering to either the pretense of fraility and victimhood or over fragility with its silly would-be defenders.

Shin…you are a very sad person. I am not running off weeping in terror, that is not me, but my friend, as you get older and have some limitations in your life, which I hope you never have to deal with, maybe you will be more charitable. I do what makes life a little easier for me, so that I am able to attend Mass daily and that is important to me. What would you rather a person do?

You should really try to take account of your own concerns…specifically your ability to be or not be charitable towards others and I will say a prayer for you.

I would rather a person not make mountains out of molehills, and pretend that something is overly difficult that is not overly difficult. 🙂

I would also say I will pray for those who think that because we discussing an action like this that should change, they can play these games to try to force the issue with emotional blackmail tactics, and call someone else ‘sad’ while taking moral high ground.

No my dear, I will pray for you too. No doubt we both need it, but perhaps not for the reasons you suspect. 🙂

The readers of this thread might ask themselves… St. Padre Pio, would he let you into the confessional, you have to ask… 🙂 St. Padre Pio, ora pro nobis.

It’s funny that Our Lord seems more concerned with the lust in somebody’s heart then what somebody wears.
Paul’s letters were directed to particular churches at particular times.
Culture determines modesty-what the West thinks is modest and what the rest of the world thinks is modesty are two very differnt things. In some cultures showing one’s feet is considered grossly immodest while going bare breasted nary turn one’s head.
The BVM was a women of her times and would dress accordingly-she was a real woman not a statue, she had to meet cultural expectations just like everyone else.
why pants are considered less modest then skirts are beyond me.anyone who has bent deeply with a dress on may be flashing a cheek. In pants no such worries.
When I wear dresses I never wear stockings -they make me itch.If God judges me by what I wear and not by who I am and what is in my heart- then I wouldn’t want to know him.
Since I know God judges the heart it is the petty thoughts of man that fuel such silliness.
Modesty should be a reflection of common sense. And how come it’s women who get the dirty end of the cultural stick? Why are men so concerned with modesty in women when they should be more concerned with their own modesty, or learn to control their eyes and their hormones? It seems the old cop-out that it was"her fault" that he sinned by lusting is still used to protect men’s ego and their ‘right’ to stare.
'Crude thought, wicked images and lust are in the eyes of the beholder and that’s why it is better to judge yourself, your actions, your improprities, your thoughts before you judge others.
Women in Islamic countries are covered from head to foot in the name of modesty. The veil being the very essence of modesty.Does it stop prostitution? Fornication? Impure thought? Lustful yearnings? Or should the veil be internal as modesty is in the mind & soul.If your thoughts are pure, if you hold no wickedness in your heart, if your eyes are on the Prize that is true modesty and not just an outward show of ‘righteousness’.

There are a lot of people here with real concerns. But there is a real lack of love and respect. It should stop. Ones who need fraternal correction should take it. Ones who feel they should give it should give it extremely humbly. I believe the only ones on this thread who presently need correction are the ones who are being disrespectful and unloving and aggrivated out of personal concerns - on both sides. Let’s be unified. In love, Sean 🙂

juliamajor, many ideas have been discussed on this thread, early on. You said “why pants are considered less modest then skirts are beyond me”. If you read earlier you will see, but I can summarize here:
  1. for the same length and tightness of pants or shorts vs a skirt, the pants will reveal more details of the shape of the thighs and adjacent areas, which the eye will be subconsciously directed in determination of dimension and sex of the person viewed. This could be intentional to get attention, or non-intentional for convienence or practibility, and can provide scandal.
  2. unisex dressing is not a traditional Christian practice, as has been voiced by saints. Pants on women has been a recent change in western culture starting with the industrial revolution when women began to work in factories.
Additionally: scandal is temptation, and does not require that what is a temptation be wrong in itself, rather that the tempted are succeptible to falling into sin, mortal or venial. Since sin of lust is any impure thoughts or desires that are not banished. (See Baltimore Catechism #3, 1318.

You’ve obviously never seen a girl in cargoes. There’s a huge difference between regular pants, and tight jeans.

So? Are we all to dress in baggy medieval or Middle Eastern clothing as many of the saints did? (You do know a good deal of them lived in those times right?)
