My favourite cardinals are Tagle (Phillipines, 56), Ravasi (Italy, 70) and Joao Braz de Aviz (Brazil, 65), Schoenborn (Austria, 68) & Turkson (Ghana, 64). I am personally hoping that one of them will become the next pope. Sorry to be so frank about the ones that I like :o

Just thought I would go out on a limb!

Anyone know how many of the Cardinals were around for the last conclave?

In no order, I hope one of these men become the next Pope, Cardinal Francis Arinze, (80), Cardinal George Alencherry (67), Carlos Amigo Vallejo (78), Phillipe Barbarin (62), Giuseppe Betori (66), Josip Bozanic (63), João Braz de Aviz (65), Antonio Cañizares Llovera (67), Baselios Cleemis (53), Fernano Filoni (66), Kurt Koch (62), John Njue (68), John Onaikeyan (69), Marc Ouellet (68) or Albert Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don(65), Sorry to be blunt as well.

I just hope they choose someone a little younger this time. It seems like a grueling job, for anyone, let alone a man in his eighties.

I forgot Ouellet! How could I! I love him too 😃

I generally follow that line of thought but don’t believe the best man should be denied because of his age either. It could happen, you could have a living Saint out there, of course, we hope they all are.

Still, I listened to one secular radio show and this woman, though not Catholic, seemed to be a moral Lutheran, she had a Catholic friend on her show to discuss this. Maybe she did not know Cardinal Arinze’s age but she said that was the one she thought was going to win. Of course, her opinion is just like all of ours really except she’s not Catholic.

I think Benedict was a great pope, but it is a very stressful job, especially in today’s hostile secular world. If he were younger, he may have been able to handle it better.

That’s interesting about Arinze. When do we find out who our next pope is?

I figured there would be more since it’s only been 8 years.

As soon as the Cardinals make a decision. 😃 Conclave won’t start until the 9th at the earliest.

I heard that the longest conclave was like 2 years or so. I’m pretty sure we’ll have a new Pope within that time frame. 😉

My goodness! Two years is a long time!

I hope by Easter. I’m almost positive they’ll have a decision by then considering all the recent conclaves have only lasted a few days or so.

But apparently, turning the heat off and removing the roof among other things are fair game to encourage a quick decision. 😉

I was listening to EWTN and Jimmy Akin had gone through statistics of the past 500 years. He said he believes they will choose someone from 60 to 70. He’s set up a website jimmyakin.com/out-next-pope where he has compiled some information.

I see on the web, ABC has some pages on Papal processes and trivia from the last time in 2005.

There have been some very young Popes, looks like as young as around 20 and yes, some sources seem to indicate some younger. You can see the names of whom they were with some simple web searches.

When we view all the voting , betting, political discourse it is quite distracting from what God may ask of us.

Should we not consider the list of prayers for the Cardinal’s that are going through the process making a selection.
  1. That they will be open vessels to the will of God and not their own.
  2. That they will receive wisdom through the Holy Spirit.
  3. That they will be present in their task and not distracted by all political, social, and commercial discourse.
  4. That we will be inspired and strengthened in the presence of His Holliness in our lives.
Perhaps others can add their prayers for the conclave of Cardinals

If you would prefer to let your reason, rather than an Irish bookie, be your guide, here are some short bios of the leading candidates for the job.[Article includes short profiles of Cardinals Scola, Scherer, Turkson, Schönborn, Ouellet, Tagle, and mention of some others]

If you mean how many cardials participated in the conclave last time, it was actually exactly the same: 117 eligible electors with 2 of them not participating bringing the total participants to 115.

If you mean how many of the cardinals participating this time also participated in the 2005 conclave, 67 of the cardinal electors were appointed by Benedict XVI. The other 48 were appointed by John Paul II. So those 48 will be participating in their second conclave.

Cardinal Ouellet from Canada was a name mentioned early on but you don’t hear his name anymore. Can anyone tell me why he wouldn’t be elected?
