It might be interesting but it is another example of really poor reporting. There hasn’t been a single Yahoo news or AP story about the Pope’s visit without at least one factual error. Don’t they actually teach journalism any more?

Funny thing…John Allen addressed this very issue in a column called “Rumor Control.” I guess the wire service reporter didn’t read it. See ncrcafe.org/node/1732

If one had done some research they would have found that JP2 did the same thing on his first visit to the US…at least at the mass in Chicago.

That this is an example of poor reporting is undeniable and it is valid to ask whether it was intentional. If someone is unaware of the Church’s position on the use of Eucharistic ministers such an article might be understandable but that seems not to be the case.

Here the author presents the “problem”:

“Lay people were not asked to distribute Communion, which was administered exclusively by 300 priests and deacons.”

Yet later in the article the author shows that he knows that what he just presented as a problem … isn’t.

*“For distribution of the Eucharist, priests and deacons are known as “ordinary” ministers, meaning they **should **do the job when they are available.” *

Is there anyone who could for one moment believe that there wouldn’t be sufficient priests and deacons available at a papal mass in the nation’s capitol? Not surprisingly the woman the article quoted who was annoyed that there were no extraordinary (lay) ministers giving communion also supports women priests and opposes Church teaching on homosexuality.

And the woman claims to be an EMHC.
Liturgical ministers are supposed to be models of the faith to the parishioners – not dissenters. Unfortunately, too many parishes/pastors inadequately screen them before commissioning them.
