Papal prerogatives

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I have noticed that we have several new members here in the ECF. I would like to ask our new members if they can participate in this poll. Before you vote, I beg you to read through the entire thread. It is 30 pages worth of (name removed by moderator)ut from posters, but it is well worth the read. There are several clarifications/explanations that needed to be made to my original statement throughout the thread because some thought I was denying Catholic teaching on the matter.

Not only because you asked me to (indirectly, since I’m relatively new here), but because I’ve never really thought about this issue beyond “The Pope is the Vicar of Christ” - I never thought about what that actually means. So, when I have done the reading I will cast my vote in the poll.

I was referring to other websites I’ve been on. BTW, I’ve also mistakenly referred to two brothers as “sisters” brothers Isa and Marlo.

I have noticed several Eastern/Oriental/Latin brothers/sisters have voted that my understanding is only mostly/partially correct. Now, I don’t know if your answer indicates an admission of greater or lesser papal prerogatives.

IF GREATER, I would like to ask this (something I have asked several times in other threads, to which I consisently get no answer):

If it is DOGMATICALLY taught by the Vatican Councils that it is the Pope’s responsibility to uphold the proper ordinary and immediate prerogatives of his brother bishops, how can he do this if he has IMMEDIATE jurisidiction with regard to matters of discipline and practice in patriarchal jurisdictions not his own? Should he not rather trust his brother Patriarchs to clean up their own houses in such matters?

I frame it this way because that is usually the point argued by those who assert greater papal prerogatives than what I have understood as expressed in this thread.

If you have answered “mostly/partially correct” with an eye to claiming LESSER papal prerogatives, can you please explain in what way my view is “giving too much” to the papal prerogatives?

I am a sister, as a matter of fact…I’m up to the top of page 7 and will read more today when I take breaks from work. I think I’m understanding things OK, but if I get to something that confuses me (that isn’t explained sufficiently in the thread as it exists now) I’ll let you know.
This is totally off topic, so you can PM me with the answer, but I’m wondering why so many think I’m male?

Brother mardukm, I read through the entire 30 pages and I agree with you. I also attempted to read through the other two threads mentioned by Fr. Ambrose (I think) in the second post in the thread, but was not able to; something about either the thread having been removed or I don’t have enough seniority or some such reason…

And I admit I do feel more knowledgeable, even if I can’t explain what it was that got cleared up. A lot of times I come to an understanding of something, only to find out that the explanation is something I always believed in the first place, just couldn’t quite put into words.
