Yet for some crazy reason he always gives me this “my house my rules” thing. I do eventually want to move out of the house but every time I discuss that matter they tell me that if I move out then they have absolutely nothing to do with me. Its almost like I either do things their way or I’m dead (figuratively speaking). What should I do?
uh, move out
otherwise you play by his rules, it’s his field
you want your own field, you pay to play

But roommate situations can also be very good and result in lifetime friendships.

My younger daughter had a tough time finding roommates in college. But finally in her last few years, she met up with some really great girls (strict Catholics, while my daughter is a Protestant), and they found a place together off campus, and life was so much fun for her. She is still good friends with these girls, and was matron of honor for one of them.
Finding roommates while you’re a full time student is a completely different experience than finding roommates when you are a single working adult. A lot of it also depends on where you live and what the community is like.
So you end up with some wretched roommates. You learn from the situation and find better roommates first chance you get. Having bad roommates probably won’t kill you. It’s just frustrating, but so is living at home and being told what to do and who to do it with and feeling like a child all the time.
My husband ended up renting a house with some friends’ he met at college. The neighborhood turned out not to be safe. He got mugged twice (well the guy asked for money, punched him in the face, but didn’t take anything). After the second time, he immediately called his school for help and they arranged for him to get into a dorm during the last weeks of the semester. Meanwhile to get out of his lease, his landlord required a very large sum of money. The landlord didn’t care who paid it and his roommates were short on cash and agreed to pay it back. He even had his roommates sign a contract stating they’d pay him back. One paid him back. The other change his phone number, fled the State and we have no idea where he is living. If we knew where he was, we could take him to small claims.

Bad roommate situations can get really bad. It can be far more pleasant to live with your folks.
