Roman Catholic bishops in Wisconsin are urging their parishioners not to bring weapons to church now that a new law permits state residents to carry concealed firearms.

“Intuitively, we understand that acts of violence, destruction, and murder are antithetical to the message and person of Jesus Christ and have no rightful place in our society, especially sacred places,” the bishops said just before the law went into effect on Tuesday.

The decision whether or not to ban guns in the church will be left up to each parish.

Someone who has an ex-boyfriend who is stalking her, old ladies who have to drive through rough neighborhoods. People who have recieved death threats for one reason or another.

In other words, lots of people whom the Church says have a right to protect themselves.

Honestly… coming from a gun-restricted country… that just sounds ridiculous.
 
Whatever happened to trusting ourselves to God’s mercy? I would guess that someone who’s killed on the way to Mass or in Mass would be on God’s “good list” 😉 . When going to Mass, I become removed from the world, if the world want’s to kill me at that point, well so be it. I don’t love my life like I love my God.
 
Those sneaky Bishops! Making every one leave their arms at home sure opens the way for receiving on the tongue the norm.😃

Although choosing to arrive at church unarmed–despite the possibility of being assaulted at Mass or on the way–might be a powerful witness to Jesus Christ’s “… those who live by the sword, die by the sword. …” there have been numerous examples where an armed person at church either prevented a total massacre or any violence at all.

Two examples where church shootings were thwarted by firearms:
In addition to these, a surprising number of church-shootings have occurred where a firearm + trained gun-owner would have prevented further casualties.

Personally, I’m all about gun rights, but I wouldn’t consider bringing a firearm to Mass. I just don’t think that those skeptical of scenarios where parishioners bring weapons to Mass to should be anything less than grateful that they don’t have to in order to worship safely.

If you live in a big city, police officers often show up to Mass still in their uniform with their gun strapped to their side. 🤷
I would guess it is because they are on lunch break or are just coming off their shift.

I doubt the Church or the parishioners would frown upon that 🙂 I love seeing people come to Mass in their obvious work attire… ummm barring garbage men and sewer cleaners (hope they have a change of clothes in their trucks 😃 )

Yeah, it might be nice to see priests in their work attire more often… OUT of and IN church, too! 😃

You seem to be contradicting yourself here? First you say that there are examples of where an armed person at Church has prevented a massacre. Then you say that you would not want to be armed at Church. But suppose, using your examples, that a criminal were to bring a concealed gun to church. Would you want to prevent a massacre or not?

I’m no superhero 🙂

My point was not that the saturation of civil society with guns and firearms carriers could prevent further massacres–only that the presence of firearms, carried by responsible owners is not necessarily the outlandish, eyebrow-raising thing that people seem to treat it as.

That is, it should be allowed but not necessarily encouraged.
 
Like another of the posters, I think it’s ridiculous that people think that carring a concealed weapon in public places is ok, whether it’s a church, a shopping mall, a school, a government building, etc. You can cherry-pick the statistics all you want for instances where carrying a gun ended up saving lives. Guns are inherently dangerous, they are carried by unstable and unwise people, and permitting concealed firearms endangers innocent people. The NRA is wrong, and the Republicans who pander to the NRA are wrong. It is just nonsense to suggest that the second amendment to the Constitution was intended to permit us to carry concealed weapons in public places.

If your car breaks down in a bad neighborhood at night, the way ours did a couple of months ago, it’s nice to know you have a deterrent for those who don’t think following the law is important.

I once, awhile back, saved a guy from to huge muggers, they were trying to kill this guy. I was unarmed. I’ll never do that again unless I am PACKING.!!!
