“Deaf Boys Raised Alarm on Priest’s Abuse”
The jist:
The deaf boys as men tried again and again for many years to get members of the archdiocese of Milwaukee to listen to them. Archbishop Meyer was informed, but sent Murphy back to the school to made recompense. At one meeting that they were finally able to call, Archbishop *Cousins replied that Fr. Murphy was to valuable a fundraiser for the school, St. John’s, so that he should not be fired but would be given only administrative duties. Finally, one of abused men sued. Murphy was then moved upstate to ‘retire’ at his family home and the case was settled for $2,000. *
Cardinal Ratzinger was notified by Archbishop R.* Weakland *about the case in *1996 but didn’t look into in until * 1998. Then, as we all know, Murphy died.
…so, despite a continual stream of complaints, during the administrations of at least three archbishops in Milwaukee, only the third of three archbishops tried to do something meaningful about this abuser, sent the case to Rome, where nothing was done for another two years-- and then the priest died.
