My parish is bringing in a speaker for the second time that I think preaches erroneous theology about the Paschal Mystery. I want to approach the pastor about it, but wanted some other opinions first. The first time I saw this speaker “perform” the entire presentation felt wrong somewhere deep inside and made me sick to my stomach. But maybe I’m wrong and need to open my mind a bit, because I heard rave reviews from others in the parish. I’d like your opinions please…
Here’s what is said about him in the bulletin:
“As we approach Holy Week, we think of the Paschal Mystery as something Jesus did for us a long time ago. But what if this simply is not the way that it works? What if the Paschal Mystery is the rhythm and pattern of life if you go the way of love as Jesus did? Dr. blah blah, a street theologian, educator and storyteller, will share his passion for the birth, life, death and ressurection of Jesus. He will enlighten us to a clearer understanding of the Paschal Mystery.”
It’s that last part that bothers me the most. I felt he didn’t enlighten us at all, since Jesus was rarely mentioned during this presentation. Basically, he wants us to see that Holy Thursday is whenever we are “fed” by moments in this life. When we are so in love with our babies that we want to eat them up. When we are having such a good time with friends that we forget to eat. Etc. And Good Friday is whenever we suffer. Divorce, death of a loved one, etc, all are Good Friday for us. And Holy Saturday is whenever we are waiting in limbo for something. And Easter Sunday is whenever we rejoice about something wonderful. You get the idea. He takes the Paschal Mystery and brings it to an everyday level in a very dynamic way that people eat up. There were some other things about his presentation that resulted in my gut level reaction (having a girl play Jesus, genuflecting to us after his presentation because we moved him so, use of very New Age statues to represent the days of Holy Week, etc…)
So, opinions? Should I lighten up? Is this erroneous theology about the Paschal Mystery?
