We all know that white is a sign of purity, and, for this reason, little girls, age 6/7 wear white to receive First Holy Communion, appropriate I would think!.
This morning’s newpaper, there is a Pastor in one of the local Catholic Churches here that has banned white dresses for this Holy Sacrament for the little girls. This girl wants to wear the same white dress her godmother wore, and I think that’s beautiful.
Her mom has phoned the Bishop, and new, the Pastor has given her permission to wear the dress as long as she wears a blue sweater over it.
As well as a Bride wears white at her Wedding.
I am very upset that a parish priest can change the rules from all the other RC Churches. Does anyone else feel as i do??

Does he offer a reason for this? This action seems really freaky to me. Roanoker

I’ve never heard of a priest banning white dresses for First Communion. It would be interesting if he gave an explanation of why he did that.

Been through this topic before.

No, I don’t feel as you do.

It seems that he feels some dresses are fancier then others and may separate the haves from the have nots!
But, tho, I agree that some of the dresses nowadays are like gowns and do make the little girls look like fashioon models, imho, I feel that the Parish Priest could simplify the matter by asking parents to keep in mind the Sacrament that their child will be receiving and that they need not dress as little models.
Some are actually like gowns and are not what we are used to seeing. My three daughters wore the same white dress and they all looked beautiful. Also, perhaps, there is a lot more competition these days.
Good common sense has gone by the wayside, I fear.
Here is a story online about it, if you would care to read it.

We have discussed this priest and his policies just recently on this Board, although I’ve lost the link.

From what I understand, this priest doesn’t like the idea of making First Holy Communion to be “special” or different from all the other times that one receives this Sacrament.

Other things he does are: not having the children receive First Holy Communion as a class, but rather, having them stay with their families and attend the regular Mass of their families, instead of having all the families come to the same Mass, or having all the children receive together.

He is also saying that “people don’t need to be pure to receive Holy Communion” which is either a heresy or else he is using the word “pure” in a different sense than to mean “in the state of grace.” In any case, people don’t put on white dresses every time they are in the state of grace, and for some reason he takes this as a reason to say that they shouldn’t wear white for First Holy Communion, either. 🤷

To my way of thinking, it seems pretty low for a grown man to make some kind of obscure theological point by attacking little girls, but maybe that’s just me. 😃

Thanks for the link. I looked earlier but didn’t see it. Thread closed.
