Some of you are optimistic about the end of east-west schism. Don’t be too optimistic, the bishop of Moscow has different opinion than the bishop of Constantinople.

Patriarch Cyril was preaching about famous Russian theologian and martyr of the 20th century, saint Illarion. The Patriarch praised saint Illarion’s teachings that the Orthodox Church is the only Church.

“Saint Illarion told them (western theologians) the Great Dogma of the Church! Which is confirmed by the Fathers of the Church and by all the Tradition of the Church of Christ. And that is that there is only One Church.
One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church! Which is Orthodoxy!” - Patriarch Cyril

My opinion is that if someone says their church is thE only one true church you can be confident it isn’t.

My response:

Pope John Paul I:

" The Ship of the Church is guided by Christ and by His Vicar … It alone carries the disciples and receives Christ. Yes, it is tossed on the sea but, outside it, one would perish immediately. Salvation is only in the Church; outside it, one perishes."

Pope Paul VI:

"The Catholic Church alone is the Body of Christ, of which He is the Head and Savior "

Pope John Paul II:

"There is no salvation outside the Church. From her alone there flows surely and fully the life-giving force destined, in Christ and in His Spirit, to renew the whole of humanity, and therefore directing every human being to become a part of the Mystical Body of Christ. "

An East - West reunion will not happen all at once. It would happen (if it happens) one Patriarch or Bishop at a time.

The Russians have always considered themselves the Third Rome, so they view themselves (not Rome nor Constantinople as the seat of Primacy). That why the Russian Emperor was called a Czar. It means Caesar. So basically, until the Russian Revolution, Russia had a Caesar, like the Roman Empire.

I’m not a Patriarch or Bishop, but even if I were I wouldn’t want to unite with Orthodoxy at the expense of no longer being in full communion with the RCC.

It’s conceivable but not at all likely, that a new council (Jerusalem II?) would bring everybody together.

But unless everybody in the sinners’ seats on all sides become persuaded, it won’t hold, whatever those at the top might say.

IMNAAHO.

Patriarch Cyril says what the Creed teaches him, Patriarch Bartholomew is kinda a hypocrat

I have question, is this true that these two popes said this?

“The Pope is not only representative of Jesus Christ, but he is Jesus Christ Himself, hidden under the veil of flesh.” - Pope Pius X (1903-1914)

“You know that i am the Holy Father, the representative of God on earth, the Vicar of Christ, which means i am God on earth.” - Pope Pius XI (1922-1939)

Did they really say this?

I think he’s implying the opposite. That one Orthodox church at a time would reunite with Rome.

It’s an interesting thought exercise, but not one likely to happen since the RCC would undoubtedly never surrender the primacy of the pope among bishops which is what I suspect the Orthodox would require for unification among other things.

NO. This is a anti-Catholic LIE.

These are quotes made up by people who truly hate the Catholic Church

I just want to say I love Melkites.

Patriarch Cyril has to obey Mr. Putin, so, sadly, there will likely be no friendliness of the Russian Orthodox toward the Catholic Church in the immediate future.

I remember talking to a Ukrainian Greek Catholic on Facebook that is formerly Eastern Orthodox (Russian, I think) and he would always refer to the Patriarch of Moscow as “KGB agent”

It is not Putin’s fault because many Orthodox dislike Rome. After all what Patriarch Cyril said here is what Orthodox Church teaches since 1054.

The context is the celebration of saint priest-martyr Illarion.
