Patron Saint question.

I hope I don’t get in trouble for asking this. .

And/or I hope no one gets upset with me for asking this, but. .

The idea of having a “patron Saint.” Where did this come from? Is it based from Scripture, from traditions in the Church, or both?

. . Is it something the Church feels God would approve of. . ? o.O

I apologize, all; but, I ask these questions because I am still learning about the Catholic faith. I just want to be knowledgeable, and know that what I am doing and deciding to practice is in line with God’s ways.

It does not help that my family, which is predominately Protestant, has pumped me full of misconceptions about the Church. Thankfully, I have taken it upon myself to read about the Catholic faith. Educate myself. I have also prayed to God, asking Him that He please reveal to me the truth about the Church.

So far, I am amazed. The essence of the faith and the Church is absolutely beautiful and makes me feel at peace. I have seriously considered Catechism and have spoken to a priest about RCIA.

It starts with something we believe in called “Communion of the Saints”

Physical death does not separate us from the Body of Christ; Rom 8:38-39

I won’t get to in depth since you are beginning your journey. But, based upon that scripture, and others that go somewhat deeper, the only thing that can remove you from Christ is sin. Therefore, all those that physically died on earth, that were in Christ’s favor, and have gone through purgatory, or skipped it purgatory is something else to tackle entirely are still with Christ, and therefore alive.

They are up in heaven, as the Catholic believe. They have earned their place. That being said, since they are still alive, and yet closer to Christ than we even are, we ask them to pray for us.

If I had an issue, I would ask my mother, brother, cousin, friend, whatever to pray for me. I would assume you would do the same? The saints are no different. They are our Christian brothers and sisters, already in heaven. So, asking them to pray for us is just like us asking someone still on earth to pray for us.

Patron Saints are more like “best friends” so to speak. They are saints that you hold closer to your heart than the others. Doesn’t have to just be one btw.

Scripture does support our belief in the Saints, but there is a ton to list here. Unless you truly want me to.

Hope it helps some. I know I got long winded, I just came out of the debate section of the forums. 🙂

So…:whistle::whistle:

It has been a whole 48 hours:shrug:

Any news to report? Inquiring minds want to know 🍿

You all crack me up. .

You’re awesome. Well, you crack me up, you’re awesome, and you make me think. How’s that? Yes. I like it.

I understand better, now. Thank you so much. Having said that, I would not mind looking over any scriptures you have for me. If you wouldn’t mind, please list them. I’d be glad to read them.

As far as a Patron or Patroness for myself, I still cannot decide. But. .

I am very much enthralled with Saint Luke, Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Dymphna.

I’ll continue to offer updates on my little quest here.

This thread and forum are a perfect example of Patronage (in the Catholic sense)–we who have been guided and prayed for by those Who enjoy the Presence of the Christ are, in our own stumbling ways, helping guide and praying for you! Patronage in action!👍

Okay, what do you wish to receive scriptures on exactly? I gotta ask, cause there are many that were hit on here. Like Communion of the Saints, has a good bit of scripture to back it up.

i have to put in a plug for St Joseph, for lareinatortura. He is one of the most powerful saints, as he is our Lord’s foster father, and I thought of him since you said among your chief concerns are your marriage and your wife. St Joseph helped me find a great job, I think of him as a very down to earth, practical person who gets how challenging it can be supporting a family. He never says anything in the Bible, he just does everything right.
Just ask him, or any saint, to help you find direction. I suspect they are all willing to help us out.

I strongly believe that you don’t pick the saint. The saint chooses you.
I’ve heard this before, but for some reason I have a really hard time with this idea. I have difficulty imagining that any saint would particularly care about me and want to be my patron saint. I don’t know.

Besides, how do I know which saint is “choosing” me?

Is there a scripture that explains where the idea of “having a Patron Saint” for something/someone/somewhere came from?

Thank you, Viki63

Your post was not only very encouraging, but it made me mindful of Saint Joseph. I will definitely seek help from him.

Nope. Not that I have ever seen or heard. There is scripture to support that the saints can hear, see, intercede for us, but not one that explains anything specific about Patron Saints. It is just a tradition for Catholics that are drawn to the saints in general. Most find one or two that they really relate to, and therefore, call them their Patron Saints. It’s more like a term of endearment, so to speak.

Oh, okay. That makes sense. I’m reading a book that explains commonly misunderstood Catholic beliefs, and it had a chapter of the Communion of Saints. I read it last night. I think it makes sense, you know, being unified not just in life, but in death as well.

Yep yep 🙂 Keep the questions coming if you got em. We are all more than glad to help out.

If you read the 13th chapter of Hebrews you find that we are to , “Remeber your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”

So, it does not specify saints, but I think it would be safe to characterize saints as ‘leaders’.

So, any progress in the selection process?

God bless

Hey Highwayhound!

I’ll check out the link. Thank you so much.

I hope to go to Mass today!

Just keep in mind, there are tons of saints, and different people will find that different saints resonate with them. You have time to read about them and decide, it doesn’t have to happen instantaneously. 🙂 It’s taken me months, but I have learned about a wonderful variety of saints in the process.

I think you’re right, Student09. I cannot really say I’ve had that happen. The only person I can say I’ve felt really comforted by–though–is Mother Mary.
