I don’t know. We’ll see. I think a lot of people underestimate Biden because of his “gaffes” which I think were fully intended. He’s the court jester for the administration, but that doesn’t mean he’s incapable. Biden is a very clever man, and I don’t doubt he’s good in a verbal knife fight.

I fully expect Ryan to be on top of the facts more than Biden. But I doubt he’s anywhere near as good at slipping a verbal knife between the ribs, as I doubt he’s used to doing it. This debate might be nothing but a back-alley political brawl, in which case Biden will have a distinct advantage. But if it really turns out to be one of weighing policies, I would expect Ryan to have the advantage.

Possibly the public would prefer to see a brawl. I don’t know.
I think you nailed it precisely. Biden will resort to the language of the average Joe and attempt to bully his way through the debate, calling Romney a liar, citing debunked studies, touting Obama’s record with misrepresentations, etc. Ryan will play the joint role of policy wonk and statistician and attempt to rationalize his arguments for the public. Which method will influence the debate most? I don’t know.

My opinion, of course, but such a question would seem to be meaningless to the millions of debate watchers who are not Catholics and who would not have a clue about what you meant by that. 🤷
Of course it, would. It isn’t a fair question, and I give him the answer in the question. Which is why I said I’d ask it.

Having seen a number of replays of the Biden/Palin debate tactics, I think Biden will clearly say the outrageous or make specious claims, hoping to draw Ryan into a wonky fact discussion or wasted time trying to debunk the statement rather than making his own statement. IOW go on the defensive. I suspect he’ll use Ryan’s quick intellect and vast knowledge against him. He’ll want Ryan to get into some detailed explanation and hope everyone’s eyes glaze over while he will stand there smirking. Interestingly of late Ryan has not taken the bait on similarly structured interviews.

I suspect Ryan will be ready for Joe. His debate partner Ted Olsen is a masterful attorney (although I am sorry he was on the side of SSM) and will know how to channel Joe to help Ryan respond effectively.

Let us pray for Paul Ryan to have a scintillating debate tonight! :signofcross:

No joke: Team Obama attack Paul Ryan for ‘eloquent rhetoric’

Ryan says he feels ‘good’ about debate versus Biden
Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan says he feels “good” and is “looking forward” to the only VP debate of election, taking place in Kentucky in fewer than 36 hours.
“I am looking forward to giving people a very clear choice,” Ryan told reporters during a quick stop to Old Farmer’s Creamery. “Look, Joe Biden has been on this stage many times, this is my first time so sure it is a nervous situation because Joe Biden is one of the most experienced debaters we’ve had in modern politics. But the Achilles Heel he has is President Obama’s record and I am really looking forward to giving the American people a very clear choice. “

This is my fear.

I hope you’re right. The Paul Ryan I’ve seen since his VP pick is a lot more personable and outgoing.

The thrilla in Manilla
“….[Biden’s] trip planners regularly scout for parishes where there’d be no big fuss over him — and no risk of him being denied Communion over his pro-choice politics.”
“…[Biden] was praised for being the only kid in his ninth-grade theology class who copped to doubts about transubstantiation, and his mother also famously instructed him, when she heard he was meeting the pope, “Don’t you kiss his ring!”
“…What Biden could learn from Ryan is that the vice president’s insistence that he doesn’t want to impose his morality on anybody in a pluralistic country doesn’t really track; the Civil Rights Act imposed morality on lots of people who wanted no part of it, and thank goodness. And same-sex marriage is doing the same, isn’t it?”
Biden-Ryan debate highlights nation’s Catholic political divide
“Like the nation at large, Catholics — once strongly associated with the Democratic Party — are almost evenly divided between Romney and President Obama.”
… “It would be hard to find better representatives of the two poles of American Catholicism. Both men are deeply steeped in their faith, yet they disagree on issues of crucial importance to the church and to society: abortion, healthcare, the government’s role in caring for the poor.”
“…The bishops, of course, are really calling for a strong pro-life vote, and they’re really stressing that this year,” Anderson said. “And that’s kind of a game-changer.”
He introduced two parishioners, Tom and Margaret Schaefer, who fully support the bishops’ campaign.”

I hope Ryan cleans Biden’s clock - for the sake of the American people.😃
Maybe so. But, it seems to lack something in Catholic charity to want to destroy an opponent.

I can’t agree with you because when I was engaged in litigation, I always wanted to win, but not at the cost of humiliating opposing counsel. Matter of fact, we were taught that if we won, we were to congratulate opposing counsel for his efforts AND to tell his client that his attorney did a good job save that the evidence wasn’t enough to carry his case. Or some such as we chose to say.

Glad I’m on a Catholic Forum, and not at the secular law school where I got that advice. 😦

Yours was a different situation, sir. In this situation, the country counts on it. I hope that Ryan figuratively buries Biden–charitably.
