I didn’t say that he’d get the entire Latino vote. Rubio is Cuban-American, Florida’s Latino community is mostly Cuban-American, he’d get that good conservative bloc of Latinos. It would do the GOP well not to be as lily-white as it always is.

Yes, there are those out there helping to at least feed the poor. I saw a photo of a member of a religious order pushing a cart filled with food through downtown Detroit. There are Churches with food pantries, and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. On the front of their envelope, it reads: “Anyone wanting a meal is fed, no questions asked, no judgments made.”

Your comment is telling. “Yes, there are those out there…” Of course, there are some on both the left and the right who help to feed the poor. But, that doesn’t equate to any organized private effort to substitute private charity to the poor in place of the system in place.

I believe that it takes a mix of governmental and private efforts to help the poor.

New Obama panic: Romney crowd sizes

The recent frantic email theme to supporters from Team Obama about Mitt Romney’s run-away fundraising successes has been expanded to the crowd size gap between the thousands who rushed out over the weekend to see Romney and new running mate Rep. Paul Ryan and the hundreds who cheered on President Obama.

The big worry expressed in a new email from Obama’s Chicago HQ: “The Republican base is energized.” The reason: Romney attracted 15,000 at a rally over the weekend.

But that is our call as Christians. It is a personal one that cannot be outsourced to the government. I think that maybe that is the crux of the problem. Too many in our country equate “society” with “government”.

Too many in our country think they should hoard as much as they can for themselves. Society is not doing enough. We must insist that the voice of the poor be heard. All I hear is how the rich need their cuts! Everything is backwards.

The only two segments of the economy have seen their purchasing power increase under Obama - welfare recipients and SS recipients - the rest of the population has LOST buying power under Obama. Apparently society is listening to the squeaky wheels while the rest are busy working for a living…

The only two segments of the economy have seen their purchasing power increase under Obama - welfare recipients and SS recipients - the rest of the population has LOST buying power under Obama. Apparently society is listening to the squeaky wheels while the rest are busy working for a living…

● Four out of five poor adults assert they were never hungry at any time in the prior year due to lack of money for food.

● Half have a personal computer; one in seven have two or more computers.

● More than half of poor families with children have a video game system such as Xbox or PlayStation.

● Just under half — 43 percent — have Internet access.

● A third have a widescreen plasma or LCD TV.

● One in every four has a digital video recorder such as TiVo.

After nearly four years of his rule, I don’t think most socialists or even left wingers would call him a socialist either.

But from a more conservative perspective, he’ll do for one until a classic socialist comes along.

How about if we “means tested” social security and Medicare, put investigators out from time to time to observe those on SSD or SSI who might actually be working for cash or doing other demanding activities, and used at least some of the money saved to greatly improve SSI?

I’m not sure we can agree on the following, but we might:
What if we did with SS what is currently being done with Medicare set-asides when it comes to tort or workers’ compensation claims? If judges were required to determine what portion of a claim was applicable to reducing a person’s future earnings or shortening his/her working years, then that portion to be paid into the social security fund and actually “locked out” of being used for other purposes.

So, to Hell with the poor, eh? They’re all comfortable in their squalor? Not my call, but you can take any position that you want. BTW, your percentages aren’t for 100%. What about those poor who are on the other side of your privileged poor? I know that the poor Navahos I send money for hardly have squat. Those elderly do not eat regularly and suffer illness on that account.

I’m not familiar with the mechanics of those programs, so can’t comment. You seem to know about it pretty well, and I apologize that I can’t either agree or disagree with you.

Again Paul you are so right. Jesus did teach us to take care of the poor, thus we always send money to the Catholic missions that feed the poor here and also one that feeds the poor overseas. The government has always helped, but it is not their responsibility, and with the shape we are in financially, they have to make many cuts. But they are not cutting Medicaid programs for the poor nor are they cutting Medicare at all. I listened last night to all the liberals telling the older people in Florida on the streets that Ryan is cutting Medicare to pieces, SO UNTRUE. Medicare stays the way it is unless you are under 55 and you may be able to get a voucher to buy your own insurance (your choice), but anyone over 65 on Medicare, it stays the same. I find the liberals turning the whole story around so that obama gets their votes. It is called lying to the people about so many issues. I hope the debates will straighten out all their intentions as the Democrats are desperate now and make false statements about Medicare and upset the elderly everywhere. I hope they all will listen to the truths told by Romney/Ryan at the debates. I can’t stand the lies and even when they are caught (like the lady that Romney killed with cancer, Romney was not even at Bain, it was 5 years later after the business went under, the woman had a new job and insurance & then died, and the whole commercial was a lie and proven so. They even used the husband in another commercial about something else. When proven it was untrue, Obama and his people said oh we have nothing to do with those ads, WRONG!! They made it all up to look like Romney’s business went bankrupt & the woman died without insurance, Totally not true, so you see what the other side is doing to try and win more votes. I swear Obama has an agenda if he wins, things will really change for the worse.
So lying is not the way to win an election of any kind. Paul are you in NY? You speak of Cardinal Dolan who I really like a lot, we are in upstate NY. Watch Fox for the real news and they go over the lying ads of Obama. It is so sad to see this happen.

With all due respect, many poorer people are also very resourceful. I have a PC, but it is a hand me down from my stepfather. I bought my large screen TV at a garage sale. There are many ways a person who doesn’t have much money, can make the most out of their home.

“Send a message” to whom? Would you have said, if Rubio was picked, that “Oh, the GOP is not just the lily-white party anymore!” I doubt it. More likely, you and others on the left would have said something like “Oh, the token minority. Please stop the pandering and pretending. You know you’re just the lily-white party.”

We’re Americans first of all. There is much more that unites us than divides us. That sort of thing. Didn’t Obama say something like that in the past? I’ll be “bipartisan” and agree with him for a change.

Of course. My family was all all steelworkers and my father was very often laid off for months at a time. We know about being resourceful. But we would never spend money on non-necessities while expecting someone else to foot the bill for the things we truly needed.

Neither would I, or most people in my position (to give the benefit of the doubt). It’s housing and food we struggle with. It seems like a ‘job’ isn’t the miracle answer to these issues from where I’m sitting either. I have a job. Heck most poor people work their behinds off - for little to nothing. And under much worse conditions, unlike those being paid $25 an hour to answer calls in an airconditioned office.

Its the cost of living that’s impossible to catch up to…put a cap on rent and you’ll make my life sooo much easier.
