I only caught the very end of the program last night but thought it was interesting. I agree that the temple looked something like a conference center.
I don’t think we got to see the part that they do their temple ceremonies.
I saw part 2 last night and agree that the presentation was fair if fairly watered down. I have always been impressed with the missonary work though I disagree with the doctrine they profess with respect to Smith.
The missionary work is impressive. But they said they lose 50% of the converts.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought they said that they didn’t have traditional open worship space like most churches. I was under the impression that they moved from room to room for different ceremonies and that the rooms they were showing were representative of the entire temple.

That was how I understood it too.

Peterdiago, I love your show! Please pass it along to everyone involved with the show. Your series was instrumental in my reversion to the one true faith! Thanks!
It’s things like that that make it all worthwhile 🙂 Thanks very much!

They could have a spent a lot more time on the subject and done a better job. I thought it was unbalanced and if I were Mormon, I’d be hopping mad. A lot were; I checked out the pbs mb after the first installment and there were a lot of Mormons who were pretty upset.

Do you have a link to that? I would really be interested to see how they try to defend their faith.

I thought it was unbalanced, too - but in the different direction to you. I thought Mormon beliefs got off very lightly and were not accurately portrayed as the charlatanry that they are.

No…you can go to pbs.org and find it. I hope you will be respectful; your comment hints of badgering them for what they believe. I’m sure you wouldn’t like it any more than they would.

My best friend is Mormon; I don’t believe in Mormon theology and believe most of their beliefs are founded on the fact that Joseph Smith was a liar and a fraud. But I respect them enough not to make them feel they have to “defend” their faith to me.

I’ve studied Mormonism intensively and know that PBS gave a rather superficial treatment of it.

With all due respect Sandi - I take great offense at that assumption. I am only curious to see their remarks. I have no intention, nor do I ever “badger” anyone.

Sorry I asked.

Well, then, I guess you’ll just have to put on your “big girl” panties, deal with it, and move on. Life is messy and full of offense.

I do 🙂

You say, Sandi, that you don’t believe their theology but you don’t feel you have to make them defend their faith.

May I ask; do you claim to be Catholic? If so, can you please tell me how you get around the issue of the Great Commission and allowing your friends to persist in a religion which is - at best - a falsehood and - if the founder is to be believed - demonically inspired?

This is a very serious question - at best, your friends’ souls are not being fed. At worst, they are in peril. If they are your friends, and you are Catholic, I would have expect you to show a little more charity towards them.

Here you can see the entire show.

I actually only watched it because a classmate emailed a bunch of us and urged us to watch. She is Mormon. Because of this, I watched it thinking that it would be balanced and truthful. I guess on some aspects it was and on others it wasn’t

If some are criticizing it for showing Mormons in a poor light, and some are criticizing it for putting Mormons in a good light, then it must be a pretty balanced show.🙂

If only that were the case . . .

The problem with the word “balanced” is that it is pretty meaningless in many circumstances; the issue isn’t “balanced” - it is accurate.

A program about Mormon beliefs does not need to be balanced - it needs to be accurate. Balance is a ludicrous idea - the truth is what is needed.

And the facts speak for themselves; it was a made-up religion which still denies exploration of the history which may lead to relevation of the fact it’s a load of moonshine.

Those are the facts of Mormonism - it is a lie, false, chicanery and so forth. These are the facts of the case, and they are not in dispute by anyone who has studied the matter at any depth. The Mormons themselves excommunicate those who are “intellectual” - and the leaders of the cult admitted it on the program!

A “balanced” report which has pro-Mormon groups telling the contradictory tale of the golden plates etc. as if it were true and also has people saying, “Well, they can be pretty controlling” is nothing of the sort.

A balanced report would have Mormons saying “I believe this” and non-Mormons saying “I believe this” and then having the two of them provide evidence. Evidence was sadly lacking - from the Mormon side because it wasn’t supplied, and from the non-Mormon side because they were simply never featured.

It was a romanticised depiction of a dangerous, treasonous, treacherous cult that is a threat to the souls of millions and a stain on the reputation of Christianity.

Balanced? If by balanced you mean that we should give lies equal creedence to truth, then count me out. I decry the very idea.

I agree. One thing the program brought out really well, I thought, was the various ways the LDS have changed their stripes since 1890. For instance, I didn’t realize that their logo had changed to a form that has Jesus Christ in much larger font than the LDS part, so as to make them seem mainstream. In fact, the effort to appear mainstream has been enormous in the LDS operation. That is one thing I felt was well-explored in the 2d program. But, while they may seem mainstream, they aren’t, and this needs to be illuminated.

If you look at my profile, you’ll know that I am not.

My favorite part of the series was the interview was the ex-druggie African-American woman who misheard the Mormon missionaries at her door when they told her which church they belonged to: “I thought they said they were from the Church of LSD. I said, now that’s a church I can join!”

She also made a crack about the most preposterous story she ever heard, about this white boy, a dead angel, and some golden plates. I thought to myself, “Where did they find this lady???”😃

If the Mormons helped her get away from drugs and re-establish her connections to her family and God, then more power to 'em. 👍

Then I guess you won’t be offended when I tell you that this sounds horribly rude. Lizaane asked a simple question, and you sounded hostile in your response. I don’t think she deserved that, and it seems like you need to brush up on your netiquette.
