I think it’d be good to point out that the Church outright condemns such acts, even if its members don’t.
Actually, I think it’s members condemn these acts, despite some of them having committed them…

There is no such thing as a gay marriage.

And I can’t help but note how much you defend all of these friends of yours, but they haven’t said one word about you. Sounds like a lot these friendships are a 1-way street, Jamie.
1-way street? You obviously don’t know them, or me for that matter. The definition of a friend is exactly that of a 2 way reciprocal street. Might I dare to suggest that if you made some great new friends who just happened to be Gay or family members who came out, you just might change your views, if only a bit. 🙂

This is true universally under the criminal law. If legislatures can come up with a better solution that seeks justice for all, I imagine they will. But it is no likely to be specific to one particular crime.
It’s not quite universal as there is generally no statute of limitations for murder. Still, there have been serious difficulties in getting convictions for murder to stick when a case gets beyond about 20 years old.

The law in the US (edited as this is different in other countries like Canada, Australia and U.K.) has generally resisted attempts to equate the penalty scheme for rape and sexual abuse, including of children, to that of murder. What the law has done is to create more legal requirements that adults who are likely to become aware of these crimes need to report them, such as mandated reporting. This to me is a preferred path because it increases the possibility that someone will be caught and stopped before they spend many years propagating abuse.

At least in the U.S., it’s also more common for sexual abuse of children to be tolled. So there is a limitation, but the time limit starts running, not from the time of the crime, but from the child’s 18th birthday.

Good point about the tolling.
I would also note that the US went through a fairly recent (1980s-90s) spate of serious high-profile false prosecutions for child sexual abuse, such as McMartin preschool case and others involving false memories of adults who claimed to be victims. Some of the alleged abusers spent decades in prison before finally being cleared. This doesn’t mean every victim who later recovers a memory is lying, but it also means that we need to be very careful about finding strong corroborating evidence when the alleged abuse happened many years ago.

I agree with you. Paedophiles seek out situations that give them unsupervised access to children. That’s why the authorities were finding them in scouting organisations, in athletics and swimming clubs, in schools and yes, in churches (not just Catholic ones).

Anyone noticing what’s going on in Hollywood and public schools right now? Yeah, it’s not new. It was just easier to cover up.

Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of older people say things like “I was abused as a kid, but the perpetrator said I was lying, so no one did anything.”
