Heh.

It’s illegal to put recyclables in your trash here (the fines are steep, too), but we have virtually no indecent exposure laws. I mean, you can literally walk through the city nude, except the parks for some odd reason. If you sit (on a bench, bus seat, etc.), you do have to bring a towel for sanitation purposes, though.
When my very liberal brother lived in San Francisco (he’s in Berserkely now), he would vote third party just because the sense of entitlement of Democratic candidates disgusted him.

Her bishop obviously does not think that her pronouncements are a cause for scandal.

I may disagree but so what.
Her bishop needs to grow a backbone. Am assuming she is still under the archdiocese of san francisco and not one in washington. Excommunicating Pelosi and others like her will send a clear message to the public that she no backing when it comes to matters of the Catholic Faith and regardless of whatever political powers she thinks she weilds, as a catholic she is still subject to authority.

Apparently, you aren’t familiar with the political demographics of San Francisco. Getting formally excommunicated is much easier than getting Nancy Pelosi voted out. 😛
Apparently not familiar.

Is her district small, so that the number of people she’s given favors too, ends up being more than 45% of the district, thereby locking her re-election?

Barny Frank had such a district, but had to resign when it was redone because of the loss of one congressional seat.

Jim

Not quite sure what you’re talking about, he’s publicly called her on her pronouncements on several occasions, and he’s invited her to discuss these grave issues personally.
What I was talking about is that Nancy Pelosi has been in Congress for 25 years and has spoken in favor of abortion for those years. Over the years I have heard that her Bishop has invited her to speak with him, she claims they are in frequent contact. I have not noticed a change in her public statements, in fact the statements seem to drift futher away from the positions of the church. I believe she is still eligible for the sacraments and is a Catholic in good standing according to her Bishop.

I have read that Kathleen Sebelius, who holds similar public views, was told by her Bishop not to present herself for Communion several years ago.

If someone is at odds with a major moral doctrine, such as abortion, I have to wonder how many years might be required in order to come to agreement or agree to disagree and part ways.

Yes ! lets not offend homosexuals, but LETS offend God who’s law we claim to follow…

I understand your concern, but the Holy Father himself is aware of her dissidence (he met with her in 2009 and evidently chastised her himself), however he didn’t recommend public excommunication. I’m no blind sheep, but I won’t pretend to know Holy Father or Archbishop’s job better than they do… if they don’t see fit to excommunicate her, I trust they have their reasons.

Oh my…

Sick. Strike San Fran Psycho permanently off my list of places to visit…

I caught it. So being the public figure she is, why would she be given Communion if she attends Mass and indeed approaches to receive?
I would say that it’s presently a l-----l’s Church. You have to remember, that this is the same Church that looks the other way with priests that are doing things with children that they are not supposed to be doing. But then, there are priests that do other things they are not supposed to do. If someone could sue the Church because of unfaithful politicians, then, as with the other suits, you would see something happen. It’s a very long leash.

The “program” part is just a figure of speech. You are right in saying that we are each responsible for our own conscience. When our conscience is in rebellion to God’s Word and Christ’s teachings, then one needs to fundamentally examine that conscience and ask why is it not in harmony with the Word of God.
Well, if I t ever find my conscience to be “in rebellion” to Christ’s teachings, I’ll be sure and ask. We are veering off-topic, BTW.

Its too bad too. It used to be a heck of a place to visit. Fisherman’s Wharf is worth the trip.
My suggestion is the piers down by the Embarcardero/Ferry building over Fisherman’s wharf, it’s much less touristy these days, and cleaner and nicer. I went to the farmer’s market there last weekend, and took a ferry across the bay to Sausalito for lunch. Lovely day!

Ms Pelosi should remember that Christ ATE with SINNERS but did NOT ENCOURAGE the contuinace of their sins! He told them to repent! He told the adulterous woman to repent.

He knows what is in Pelosi’s heart and it would take a lot for her to change, I am sure.

She also needs a copy of the bible and the Catechism cause I am sure she doesn’t know some of the teachings of the Church as well as she THINKS she does!

I visited our lady of whirlpool in sf quite recently and can honestly tell you that you are not missing anything. If felt like every every other block some homeless guy was camping out on the sidewalk. The cathedral itself felt like an unholy tomb. If you wish to make a local stop i suggest visiting the missions of california. My favorite at the moment is mission carmel where his holiness John Paul II visited. The people there are also way friendlier than those of SF.

JM - this is exactly why I came to the conclusion yesterday ,that perhaps it is time for Christians to start calling it Holy Matrimony and start behaving like that is really what it is - till death do us part, in sickness and in health , for better for worse, for richer for poorer.
I think this is an excellent idea.
While I believe their is a difference between being FOR same sex partner marriage and being of the position that people should be treated fairly and humanely, I think the idea of equality is a vicious misnomer (look what it has done for women).
As for myself, my support is for civil unions. Now, a same gender couple can call it civil marriage, they can be in a faith system that will have a ceremony and call it that, all of which is not my business. I am one who believes civil union should be open to all adults, including family members and business partners or whoever wishes to enter into this kind of contact. I am not sure what you meant about women, but I think if we go into it, we’ll get ourselves way off-topic. I don’t agree that “equality” is a vicious misnomer, but certainly some seem to insist on applying it in nonsensical ways.
If ‘they’ ( NP and her ilk) truly believe in equality for all ,then why don’t they set a standard tax rate for all, take the same pension, pay , health care, etc as other government employees. Heck why not just set a standard hourly wage for ALL citizens and ALL people are paid according to the hours they work regardless of if it were cleaning toilets or heading up a multi national company overseeing 1000s of employees- that would be equal right?
I’ll vote for it, write it up.
Now for the REAL devils advocate statement. NP and her ilk are following their conscience it is not their fault that it is badly formed , that is the fault of her parents and the Church, right? So they are not guilty if it is truly what they believe through their ignorance?😃
We were doing fine until you decided to call me ignorant (being one of “her ilk”). Instead of entering judgement against posters and politicians, perhaps we could just stick to voicing our opinions and arguments about the issue.

Let’s just acknowledge going in that you and your ilk believe you are right and Pelosi and I and our ilk, believe we are.

Pope John Paul ll in a talk to the Bishops in 1987:

It is sometimes reported that a large number of Catholics today do not adhere to the teaching of the Catholic Church on a number of questions, notably sexual and conjugal morality, divorce and remarriage. Some are reported as not accepting the clear position on abortion. It has to be noted that there is a tendency on the part of some Catholics to be selective in their adherence to the Church’s moral teaching. It is sometimes claimed that dissent from the Magisterium is totally compatible with being a “good Catholic,” and poses no obstacle to the reception of the Sacraments. This is a grave error that challenges the teaching of the Bishops in the United States and elsewhere."
It’s really much better when things that are supposed to be quotes have links. (Not saying it isn’t a quote, just sayin.’)

I’m Catholic, I do. Pelosi is Catholic, she does. Many Catholics do, they just don’t post here.
Clarification. Catholic doctrine forbids the support of same sex marriage. As long as you recognize that you stand against the moral teaching of the Church.
