PITTSBURGH (Dec. 12) - The body of a state trooper was found near his cruiser after he pulled over a car early Monday, police said.

Cpl. Joseph Pokorny was found dead about 2 a.m. near an exit of Interstate 279 about 5 miles southwest of the city, officials said.

“I just want to say that we are going to work this investigation until the suspects involved in this cowardly murder are behind bars,” said state police Col. Jeffrey B. Miller.

Pokorny, 45, who had been a trooper for more than 22 years, was found by a Carnegie borough police officer. The officer saw Pokorny’s car door open and found the trooper’s body outside of the car.

for the class i TA for, a student wrote a paper for their end of term assignment about increasing violence against law enforcement in the last years.

she cited an almost 25% increase in some studies (which didnt provide the best methods), which i found hard to believe.

after reading this, and then doing some research, i found that there have been 6 police fatalities in the past 3 weeks. 3 just this last 8 days

without COMPREHENSIVE statistics, it does look like violence against law enforcement (if you include prison guards) is increased.

does anyone else notice an increase on the frequency of violence against police too? im searching for a good dissertation topic, and this might be an alley i can head up. maybe identify the issue so that they can try and make it safer for them.

im afraid it will be too sad though. these poor guys. we all need to pray for this trooper and his family and friends…

Both the Fraternal Order of Police (grandlodgefop.org/memorial/rollcall/index.html) and FBI (fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm#leoka) have information going back to 1996. I’m sure there are records somewhere going back further.

I hate seeing stories like this since both my father and older brother are police officers. They both wear bullet proof vests, but even those don’t protect your head (I believe in the incident you post the officer was actually shot in the head), nor do they protect your sides. A couple of years ago an officer in St. Louis was shot in the side between the front and back of his vest during a traffic stop, and he died from the wound.

Good luck with your research - I hope it turns up good data for you (not that the data is really good…)

Peace
