Yes, we had a soloist with the most beautiful voice sing the sequence as everyone else sang “Veni Sancte Spiritus” softly in the background. It was just beautiful and if it’s purpose is to call down the Holy Spirit - it was obvious to all those present that it worked! It was very moving.

So sad when even a successor to the apostles leaves our required parts of the Sacred Liturgy in order to save time. I bet his homily was plenty long.

I have always lead the congregation in singing of the sequences when they appear. My priest likes us to do even the optional ones. They take a little creativity, but since we have a congregation that likes to sing and lack a trained choir or cantor, it is the best we can do.

One thing I do is use the metrical index to find a familiar enough song to fit the words in. I know, for example, “Tantum Ergo” fits ont of the sequences (Corpus Christ, I think).

Is it permissible for a lector (lay not instituted) chant the seqence on Easter and Pentecost when it is not sung by cantor/choir?
Or does it need to be deacon or priest? All the GIRM says is that it is not optional on Easter and Pentecost. Sadly at our parish the sequence is always skipped on those days, but I’m getting ready for next year.

A cantor (or the choir) and the congregation are the ones who the sequence belongs to. It would be most appropriate to have the congregation, choir or, lacking those two, a cantor sing or say the sequence.

As always, obedient to Rome;

Adam
