But the bible is the reference for Jesus’ words. Catholic Traditions dont say any new ideas from Jesus, or do they? 🤷
The living tradition of the Church is the context in which we read the Bible. Without some doctrine of tradition, the acceptance of Scripture as God’s Word makes no sense and has no point. This is what fundamentalists miss.

I’m not a Catholic but an Anglican, and according to my tradition there is no infallibly revealed truth outside of Scripture. The Catholic position is complicated, and I will let the Catholics explain it to you! (Or I’ll post on it later when I have time and inclination!)

Sounds like more of a mental health issue than a religious one.

thats a little bit confusing. i just like to know why people should not begin with the bible in learning about jesus’ words.

Don’t cast your perils before swine etc…I do wonder if her god sanctions such language, her swear words I mean.

I don’t think you can reason with an unreasonable person, I mean not until they’re ready to listen, and at this this stage only her ears are open, and her heart is closed, keep knocking, and don’t get annoyed, the Holy Spirit will tell you what you have to say.

Pray to the Holy Spirit.

And wait a minute what about those 3 still living Nephites?
I’m one of the Nephites.

Or wait, maybe that’s neophyte.

😃

righteousone, just let it drop, until this person brings something up.

Ps my mom is still 25 - Didn’t ask!!!

I agree.

Righteousone, I think that you must have did something to provoke her. The story is too one-sided.
Actually, let us imagine someone newly “on fire” after joining some church of an evangelical bent. She’s all excited about “witnessing” and certain that she’s going to go out and convert some fellow Catholics with “the truth”, and make them as happy as she is. This is a person who is optimistic all out of proportion to her chances of success, and who is pinning no small part of her self-esteem on winning a convert. She doesn’t realize it, but her quest is based on some false premises: Catholics are content with just showing up at their Mass, but I’m a good Christian now. Getting converts is what I do, you just watch. That is what the Spirit does, and the Spirit will do that for me. The Spirit is going to be with me. Catholics don’t read the Bible, after all, so I have lots to teach them all. Everybody at my new chuch is so supportive, they’re going to be so thrilled at my success. Let’s go, team! (I’m not saying the members of her church are putting this on her. I’m imagining these as self-generated expectations.)

The stage is set.

If this new evangelical were confronted by a Catholic bearing the uncomfortable news that this firebrand is in reality all wet, that the Bible is not what she thinks, that Catholics are not what she thinks, that she and her church are in fact is not what she thinks, that in reality she doesn’t know what she’s talking about, the reaction may not be that hard to imagine. “You lie” or “I die” (of embarrassment, of the loss of my great plans and what is dear to me, and so on), those are the options. How is that going to play out? Some variation on “Die, Lying Devil, Die! Begone to Hell!” is my first guess.

I’m not saying she’s a mental case. I am saying she may very well have a very big emotional investment in a battle that she is shocked to realize she is not going to win. The OP may have really messed up this new evangelist’s tea party. There are not a few people in the world who get so invested in “Plan A” that they can’t cope with it very well when it doesn’t work.

OP: Your job, I suppose, is to either help ease her transition between Plan A (make a new convert) and Plan B (talk about our faith) OR, if she isn’t interested in giving up Plan A, then getting off the subject entirely and switch to the preaching that doesn’t use words. That part is very important: give her as little pretext as possible to console herself with the idea that you’re just a self-satisfied jerk. Let her know you had no intention of upsetting her, and treat her beliefs with respect. You will not get a convert (or revert) yourself by roughing her up, emotionally or theologically.

Good luck.

Right now she’d beyond rational argument. And I have a problem with Contarini’s comment - you weren’t hitting her with abstract theological concepts, you were telling her the truth and she wouldn’t even consider it. It is an objective historical fact that the Church wrote the New Testament - it didn’t just come down from Heaven in a gold case. If she doesn’t want to hear or know the truth, that’s a serious problem.

But you don’t want to alienate her further, so don’t try to use rational argument for the time being. Just pray for her, and love her. Pray that her mind will open to at least consider the truth.

Today I had a debate with a Protestant from a church called “The Bridge of Christ” or something like that. She said that I was crazy in telling her that her bible came from the Catholic church, that it was compiled by the Roman Pontiff in 397 A.D. at the Councl of Carthage.
Well, I never heard such hatred toward me with her name calling and saying that I was the one who was a kook for saying this. She went on and on, quoting Scripture, everything was the bible, bible, bible. I tried to tell her about the Catacombs with their early church writings on the wall from the saints, and about the Early Church Fathers. She simply called me a f------jerk and said satan was attacking me. Even tho I told her sola scripture was not biblical, she refused to think anything else. She was so angry that I couldn’t believe she could act as she did. I was calm and just told her historical facts, then she said “screw history”. What else can convince her that our church is the one and only church? I am xhausted from telling her the same old thing, you know, 2,000 years in existence, unbroken link…is there anything else I can do to basically shut her up and start thinking about it?
Please don’t say it’s hopeless, i will see her again. Thanks.
The woman is definitely mentally unbalanced. There is nothing you can do or say to her at this time. She has a lot of problems stacking up in her right now. My advice is to stay away from her and pray for her.

i would never do anything to provoke anyone. It’s just how she is.
BTW, she has called me and apologized for her behavioe, that is how I know I’ve done nothing wrong. She cannot except truth as most can’t about the Catholic church. It is what it is.

Thank you for the great answers, I knew Scripture would reveal it, except I forget where the lines are in the bible. I just might print out these threads and give them to her…she said she hopes that “the rapture” comes soon…Lord have mercy…🤷

I have to disagree - It is his job to plant the seed of Truth - The Holy Spirit will choose the time and place to let it grow,
The SEED cannot be planted on stone. All you can do is pray for the person that eventually the knowledge of the truth can be known.

She must be in a lot of spiritual, emotional pain. Peace.

No - Just the opposite - She knows that she is the only one that has rhe Truth and has to save us all before the Rapture Fairy shows up.

What she does not know is her bible is based on the work of a Catholic Priest who used a half a dozen scrolls from the 11th and 12th century and 1 from the 10th

And…when she was screaming at me, she insisted I was insane by saying man wrote the bible…well, no kidding but she can’t seem to grip that it was from the Catholic church.
I’ll even go so far as to say that I care for Protestant people because I know they have the half truths, but she wasn’t even a ‘normal’ Protestant. Usually some of my Protestant friends don’t even care about what I say or simply shrug, but this one was strange. Spewing vulgarities and saying I was a kook by telling her the CC gave her her bible. She simply won’t believe it.

How I met her is we have a coffee club every morning at this coffee shop where we gather and just shoot the breeze. She was one of the crowd. I saw her today and she apologized again and I said “don’t be mad at me, be mad at history” to what she replied “don’t start”. 🤷

Everyone here has been so good to me and came to my rescue that I feel a little emotional because I haven’t been the most charitable to some on this forum. :crying: I would like to apologize to anyone whom I’ve offended, especially Valke, Lily and the others who are non-Catholic Christians. I just get compelled  then simply say whatever comes to mind…I will try and be more charitable here BUT IT’S SO HARD…I promise I will…
