If Jesus returned right now I wouldn’t take the time to change out of my shorts and polo. I wouldn’t want anything to slow me down in getting to wherever He was.
You’re not the only one. I’m home sick and I’m in my nightgown and flip flops. Nothing would stop me as I ran out the door. I think I’d still be alright because it hangs below my knees, has sleeves halfway to my elbow and isn’t low cut in the front or back. It is also made of thick material.

Completely agree with the both of you. I’m sitting at the PC shirtless wearing nothing but a pair of gym shorts.

For the fashion cops, Jesus died on the cross barefoot and with nothing but a towel covering his junk (sorry, that’s what us guys call it), in your definition, wouldn’t that be immodest attire for Church? God won’t love me any less if I come to Mass wearing shorts and my ankles exposed.

See the Bible - John chapter 21 - quote from vatican.va/archive/ENG0839/__PXT.HTM :

4
When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5
Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.”

6
So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish.

7
So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea.

8
The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish.

The Douay-Rheims Bible translates John 21: 7 as follows - quote from drbo.org/chapter/50021.htm :

[7] That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved, said to Peter: It is the Lord. Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, girt his coat about him, (for he was naked,) and cast himself into the sea.

Apparently, Peter found it important to put on his coat, not to stay half naked, before he jumped into the sea to go hurrying to the shore and meet Jesus. And we think it’s OK to go wearing shorts and bare shoulders, to go meet Jesus in the Eucharist?

Quoting again Fr. Dominic Mary’s sermon, it seems to me that he would see no difference between a church and an adoration chapel, simply because both are the House of God, and because God’s holy presence in the Eucharist is there, in both cases:

Quote:

**It is disrespectful to our Lord who gave us the virtue of purity and modesty. It is clear that there must be a return to having a holy fear of God, and for his true presence in the Eucharist and for being in His House… **

Using this logic, modesty, and coverig one’s shoulders and knees, would be required because we are in God’s House, and we are in God’s presence in the Eucharist. So, my question still is: after we have clearly established that shorts, skirts above the knees, and exposed shoulders are forbidden for church, could it be that they are nevertheless allowed in the Adoration Chapel which is also God’s House and where we also come into God’s holy presence in the Eucharist?

Well, that’s one way to interpret it, especially if you think wearing shorts & exposing bare arms (don’t forget bare ankles) as being half-naked! We need to call the Swiss Guard to remedy and enforce this pressing issue.

Are you sure Peter hadn’t girt his loins due to the chilly water? 😃

I wish John the Apostle who wrote this chapter of the Gospel had a thermometer to measure the water’s temperature when Peter jumped into the sea… 😃 but unfortunately he either didn’t have a thermometer, or he forgot to record the thermometer’s reading for us posterity…

But I admit you have a point. 😛 I can only speculate why he girt his loins, and yeah, it could be his sense of modesty… the chilly water… the need to protect himself from some ancient piranha taking a bite out of his naked body… 😛

However one thing is sure: I don’t think that wearing shorts and exposing bare arms (as in sleeveless dress, and bare shoulders) is immodest (or even if I think so, I’m just a small potato) - it’s the Vatican who thinks so! :doh2: It’s the Popes, and Cardinals who think so, it’s our Bishops and Priests in America who think so, and I could post twenty different references to this effect! Have you watched Fr. Dominic Mary’s sermon on modesty and dress code, available on youtube? You see, it’s Fr. Dominic Mary on EWTN’s televised Mass who insists that “one should not come to church dressed in shorts… bare shoulders… shirts and dresses should have some sort of a sleeve”, and it’s the Pope who enforces a similar dress code in the Vatican and throughout the churches of Rome, and I’m only listening to and obeying the instructions of my Catholic shepherds! Do YOU listen to our shepherds? Do YOU obey the instructions of our Pope, bishops, and priests?

Another moment when I’m really glad the people here at CAF are not God.

Do you have any thing showing that the Pope has indicated in any way that the standards at the Vatican should be enforced around the world?

I don’t think there is anything to show in regards to the Pope . What is to show is that for some reason the Vatican indicates a certain mode of dress. What could that mysterious reason be?

Fr. Mary is addressing his Parishoners on attire at Mass. Fr. Mary does not speak on behalf of my Priest or Bishop.

Here’s what you might be looking for:

Standards of Modesty in Dress
Imprimatur dated Sept. 24, 1956
“A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper.”
The Cardinal Vicar of Pope Pius XII
p.s. About that quote - in the book it is noted that "short sleeves were also permitted as a temporary concession, with ecclesiastical approval, because of “impossible market conditions.”

I will post more instructions, directly from our Popes, later.

But generally, there’s not even a need for the Pope to intervene. In the “resource thread” - see forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=691207 , I and others posted (and will continue to post) instructions to the same effect, from Catholic Bishops and Priests located throughout the world: Venice, other Italian cities… Knock, Ireland… Croatia, France… USA: Alabama, Texas, California, Louisiana, Washington, Oregon, Virginia, DC, Arkansas… Mexico… several cities from the Philippines… Sri Lanka, Malaysia… Brisbane, Australia…

If you are located in Papua-New Guinea, your case might be an exception… your local Bishop might have instituted different norms of modesty.

But if you are located in the USA, in Mexico, in Europe, or the Philippines: our Bishops and Priests have spoken. No shorts for Mass. No skirts above the knees. No bare shoulders.

This thread has led me to think about what I have worn to Mass, both on Sunday and during the week. None of what I have worn has been considered immodest. While the Vatican may require black clothing that covers falls below the knees, and that shoulders are covered, it is not a requirement throughout the Universal Church.
When I was much younger, I did not own any dresses or skirts that extended below my knees. Nor were dresses or skirts that long even available in the stores. A favorite outfit was a short blue skirt, red long sleeve blouse and blue vest. At the time, dress slacks were not really considered an option (although I did wear them when on crutches). Skirt lengths dropped to full length and I never did return to wearing skirts more than an inch above my knees. Yes, there have been times when I wore shorts to daily (not Sunday) Mass and activities held within the parish.
The Church does not expect anybody to have a different wardrobe for worship than might be worn the rest of the week. Traditionally, a person might have “Sunday Best” clothing that reverted to everyday wear when the everyday wear could no longer be patched.
I listed school expectations in an earlier post. These standards are reasonable throughout the United States; and of course no cleavage.
I have no problem with flip flops. Although I never wore them to Church, I do remember them being my summer footwear during my childhood. If footwear is to be removed during Adoration, what difference does it make what type is worn?

Maybe a post from this century would be good. 👍

You might want to check your “resource thread.” The “Catholic Bishops and Priests” from Alabama is one priest that preaches on TV. Sorry, how about a quote from Archbishop Rodi?? Or even Lipscomb.

Your priest may have spoken. My Priest and Bishop? I haven’t heard a word from them. And the Bishop knows me by name. And saw me in a skirt that was above the knee.

Same here and after doing a 9 page google search with the phrase “wearing shorts to Mass in the Diocese of Des Moines”, the ONLY thing I can find was a request from a Parish priest that Lectors, Hospitality Minsters, etc. that they not wear shorts to Mass when it’s their weekend to serve.

Can you show me that the Church refuted, rejected, or superceded the instruction by the Cardinal Vicar? Has the church refuted, rejected or condemned what Fr. Dominic Mary said on EWTN? Has the Church rejected and censored the priests at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama, who instituted a similar dress code to that enforced at the Vatican, and preached by Fr. Dominic Mary?

The answer is NO. None of those instructions and teachings were rejected or changed by the Church. Consequently, those instructions and teachings are still valid and in effect.

Ok, you win!

I’d imagine it’s to cut down on tour groups being trailed round St. Peter’s before they go for an ice-cream in a cafe and on to the next ‘must-see while we’re ‘doing’ Rome.’

In other words, to try and keep a little reverence in St. Peter’s, because if tour groups have to stop and think how they are dressed before they enter, it might deter those who are just going in to gawp.

The only dress code that I have found in most parishes pertains to extraordinary ministers. These people will be asked to wear business type clothing. Women are asked not to wear skirts with thigh high slits. Even here, the standards may be general. Skirts should be knee length, not necessarily longer. Yes, I have belonged to several different parishes and have been expected to adhere to the parish standards.
My overseas parish does have a dress code for weddings as well. Brides are asked not to wear clothing that reveals cleavage or is bareback. Shoulders are to be covered and dresses are to be at least knee length. Consider that this is in the Middle East where standards of dress are for the most part more conservative than in the United States or Europe.
As already mentioned, shoes must be removed before entering the Adoration Chapel.
