This coming Thursday Pope Francis will receive Tahseen Sayid Ali (actual name, Mir Takshin-beg) the spiritual leader of the Yazidi people in audience. The Yazidis are a minority group that is suffering persecution in Iraq, at the hands of the jihadists of the so-called Islamic State, just as the Christian community is.

In the many appeals he has sent out over the past few months, Pope Francis has never once the neglected to remind the world, not just of the Christians suffering persecution but also other minorities being persecuted in the Middle East. For example, in the letter he wrote to Middle Eastern Christians just before Christmas, he said: “Nor, in writing to you, can I remain silent about the members of other religious and ethnic groups who are also experiencing persecution and the effects of these conflicts.”
