Persecution of the Church shown in second century texts

This is exciting! I guess there are a lot more scrolls and such to go through. I love this stuff. Can’t ever get enough of it. I’ll be watching for further news…Roanoker
 
We also know that the Church in North Africa was also severely persecuted between the years 635 and 711. One poster on CAF used the number 30 million as the number killed. But I have never seen any corroboration of the 30 million figure.

In any case, Christianity was not only persecuted between 635 and 711, but was wiped out for all practical purposes.

I’m hoping someone can find some quantitative data on that later persecution.

30M is way way too high. Quite simply, there weren’t 30M people to kill.

Would that Muslims have been around that early? I’m honestly not sure. I know they appeared sometime around in that area of time but I’m not sure if that was early enough for them to be around or not. If so, was it the Muslims who persecuted the Church in Africa at this time?

I wonder who was persecuting the Church in the 2nd Century? Surely there was no Muslims persecuting them then because Muslims did not exist till the 6th or 7th century.

Quite right, at the height of it’s power the Roman Empire had less than 50 million subjects, to think later down the line there were 30million killed is ridiculous.

All of this stuff is freely available on the internet. Use the Google, Google Scholar, Dogpile, and Clusty search engines. Also check Amazon which has huge numbers of relevant books. Islam was formed in AD 635 in Arabia, then moved north to the Holy Land and west across Christian North Africa. In AD 711 they crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and landed at a place in Spain called Tarif.

By AD 732, the Moorish invasion had extended up into France where their advance was turned back at the Battle of Tours by Charles Martel.

The war in Spain lasted nearly 800 years … after a great deal of fighting and a second set of Crusades … until AD 1492 when the Moors were expelled (not killed) back to North Africa. One of the “peace dividends” was the financing of Columbus’ expedition to find a water route to China … needed because the land route was blocked … shut off by the Islamic conquest of the region around Turkey.

Please feel free to look this stuff up. It’s important to explore the actual dates of significant events. Use multiple sources. The history of Christianity is complex and it is both useful and entertaining and enlightening to explore these events.

Also, Catholic Answers bookstore has an OUTSTANDING CD set on the Battle of Lepanto. Extremely well done. The Battle of Lepanto was THE turning point in blunting the spread of Islam into Europe.
