It is not a personal interpretation (if you mean without faith) of scripture…its is a personal revelation form God the spirit when there is a born again personal relationship with our lord and savior Jesus Christ. Peter experience that first hand when he acknowledged Jesus
as the son of the living God.

God loves you…God bless

Ok I have a personal relationship and gee you know sometimes I get it wrong. The Holy Spirit didn’t remove my emotions or my ego, or my past experiences. So how do you know that it’s God speaking or your ego? Shouldn’t you have to discern it first?
How do you know that what you know is from God? 🤷

That’s why you keep seeking him…keep praying…keep asking for guidence into all truth…its a life long journey…with trust in him he will not not let you stray.

I’m also wondering if a believer interprets the Bible and ends up with a Catholic interpretation, is that declared wrong? Just curious.

Peace.
Surprisingly, a lot of people do come up with Catholic interpretations. As long as we’re wondering… Since sola scriptura started after the printing press made the Bible so readily available, about 500 yrs ago, and tossed out 1500 years of **traditional Christian understanding, ** do you think they will finally “get it” in 1500 more years?

Pray always- but if it’s a personal revelation from God why can’t you trust it?

Dear David in Christ,

That doesn’t make logical sense, when there are over 25,000 different denominations all claiming that theirs is the divine revelation.

Why was Jesus so anguished the night before he died, when he prayed,
20 "I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 The glory which thou hast given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and thou in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them even as thou hast loved me.
John 17:20-23

True but how do you determine who is correct when many people believe they are being led by the Holy Spirit but have many different “interpretations” of what scripture means?

True but how do you know whose interpretation is correct? Scripture is not self-interpreting and there is no place in scripture that says you are “guaranteed” to get the true interpretation of scripture if you “believe” you are guided by the Holy Spirit.
you compare it with Scripture.

Friend, sometimes it is more prudent to look for guidance than to only ask for guidance

When it comes to Sacred Scripture, there are study guides, aids, Comentaries, that one can search.

Looking for answers on your own can be like defending yourself in court. It is very easy to find answers that we are comfortable with, but my friend, is this necessarily THE TRUTH?

Take GREAT CARE in teaching yourself, unless you have the special education and talent from God to do so:thumbsup:

you compare it with Scripture.
I think I understand what you mean here. You take your interpretation of Scripture and test it against your interpretation of other Scripture. Is this what you meant? Do you ever look at other people’s interpretations and commentaries? I am reminded of the Bereans. They tested Paul’s message against the Scriptures that they knew. So which Scriptures were those? Hard to say. I would assume that they used the Greek Septuagint Old Testament if they had anything in writing. If not, it was purely what they had been taught as children.

It doesen’t make any sense becuase your looking at earthy denominational theology of men instead looking up toward christ and the plain truth scripture for on matters of the church.

Dear David in Christ,

That doesn’t make logical sense, when there are over 25,000 different denominations all claiming that theirs is the divine revelation.

Why was Jesus so anguished the night before he died, when he prayed,

Jesus allowed personal interpretation:

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” [Luke 10:26]

In addition, there are many doctrines that are held by the church that Jesus hates: (Note that Jesus is speaking to His church in this passage)

And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write… I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols… Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds… Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden. [Rev:18…24]

Notice in the above passage that Jesus holds individuals responsible for which doctrines of the church they believe and which doctrines they reject. Those in Thyatira who followed all church doctrine without question are in danger of being cast, “into great tribulation” but those who had discernment in the church are spared any punishment from the Lord.

Note: In the Bible “sexual immorality” is often a reference to the making of idols - not physical relations with another person.

Jesus allowed personal interpretation:

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” [Luke 10:26]
  • As long as that personal interpretation was correct (Luke 10:27-28):
27: And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
28: And he said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.”

In addition, there are many doctrines that are held by the church that Jesus hates: (Note that Jesus is speaking to His church in this passage)
  • Yes, Jesus condemns doctrine or teaching that is corrupt, just like he praises the churches that didn’t fall into idolatry, etc. (See Rev 2:8-10, Rev 3:7-9). Jesus wants us to be perfect (Matthew 5:48), and this is clear in these letters. Even the letter you quote starts with what the church is doing right.

Obviously it is possible to misunderstand scripture. If we are searching the scripture and asking God to lead us into all truth, He will do so as He promised. However, to simply believe something because it is the official teaching of a church is a mistake IMO.

The scribes and the Pharisees studied the scriptures and held the highest positions in their “church” but Jesus said they were the, “…blind leading the blind”.

It is better IMO to be searching and praying and be wrong then to simply believe because my church says so.

For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

I agree with you that one shouldn’t blindly follow for no reason. I study and pray the Scriptures and I find that my interpretations are inline with what the Catholic Church teaches. Does that mean that I am blindly following?

So while we should personally read, pray, and study Scripture, that doesn’t mean that the Church is wrong in its interpretation.

The “teachings” Catholic Church are not an “earthly denominational theology.” Their teachings were established by Jesus Christ and the Apostles.

If “the plain truth of scripture” is so “plain”, how can 50% of Protestants believe Baptism is only symbolic and the other 50% believes it is necessary?

God bless.

Excuse me? No, Scripture and traditional Christian understanding together know that when the bible speaks of sexual immorality it means sexual immorality. Where are you getting your information???

You really should check your sources.

Great question.

Imagine that your heart and mind are blackboards in a school room. If at all possible I want to start with a clean slate and allow the word of God to write God’s truth into my heart and mind. Unfortunately, when we come to God’s word, our hearts and minds have many writings and ideas about God already written on them. Much of what we were taught as children or what we learned later, right or wrong, is already written there and there is no longer room for the word of God to change us.

As I spend time in God’s word each day, I first want to pray and ask God to remove anything that is contrary to His truth from my heart. “Lord, please help me to have ears to hear Your word and hide your truth in my heart that I may not sin against You.”

The True church:

The church is the Body of Christ. Ephesians 1:22-23 says, “And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” The Body of Christ is made up of all believers in Jesus Christ, from the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2) until Christ’s return. He alone is the supreme Head over the church, not a pope, minister or pastor.

The universal Church is the Church that consists of all those who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. First Corinthians 12:13 says, “For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” We see that anyone who believes is part of the body of Christ. The true Church of God is not any particular church building or denomination. The universal Church of God is all those who have received salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

The local church is described in Galatians 1:1-2: “Paul, an apostle…and all the brothers with me, to the churches in Galatia.” Here we see that in the province of Galatia there were many churches—what we call a local church. A Baptist church, Lutheran church, nondenominational church, etc. is not the Church, as in the universal Church, but rather is a local church. The universal Church is comprised of those who have trusted in Christ for salvation. These members of the universal Church should seek fellowship and edification in a local church.

In summary, the Church is not a building or a denomination. According to the Bible, the Church is the Body of Christ—all those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation (John 3:16; 1 Corinthians 12:13). Local churches are gatherings of members of the universal church. The local church is where the members of the universal church can fully apply the “body” principles of 1 Corinthians 12—encouraging, teaching, and building one another up in the knowledge and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

God bless.
