Peruvians see miracle in famous crucifix spared during earthquake

ima, Aug 17, 2007 / 11:20 am (CNA).- Peruvians are calling it a miracle that despite the massive destruction to the Shine of Luren—located in the province of Ica–in the August 15 earthquake in Peru, the huge crucifix venerated for centuries by Peruvians was unscathed. The image of the Crucified Christ, which has been venerated in the city of Ica since the 16th century, suffered no damage even though half of the shrine was destroyed by the 8.0 magnitude quake that shook the Peruvian coastline and took the lives of more than 600, leaving thousands wounded.

Lots of miracles going on…including this one
A similar report has been given by townspeople from another church, the Capilla de Socorrro (Help Chapel) which is also located in Ica, Peru. The chapel was completely destroyed, yet townspeople have stated that the statues of the Virgen de Socorro and Cristo Redentor were the only things saved from the chapel.

it depends on your point of view. how can you say there was a miracle when in the same church all those people died during mass? just because some things are preserved in the sanctuary doesn’t seem miraculous to me with all the death and destruction. surely not all things get destroyed during an earthquake.
 
How can you say that? Death is not an end nor is it destruction. Some people would DREAM of being taken from this world by the Lord during a Mass. It is the Lord’s decision when and whom passes on. So its important to keep our “Sin Checkbook” balanced by going to Confession to get them reconciled. God could take you at anytime…so best be prepared. 👍

It IS a miracle that this Crucifix was not destroyed. Earthquakes may not destroy everything but they do destroy a lot of stuff. The tilma of Guadalupe never got destroyed, no matter what happened. There was even a bomb dangerously near that tilma and it still never suffered a single injury. Tilmas always decay easily, but this one never does. Don’t get me started on the wonderful Shroud of Turin or the wonderful things spared from the Hiroshima bomb! I’d be ranting for an hour. 🙂

When we speak of the sacred, its important to think carefully before opening our mouths/clicking the submit button. Every step we take to learn to have a more responsible attitude is never a knee-jerk one. 😃

Perhaps you missed the part about 600 people dying? I’m glad that the Cross survived as it is giving a lot of people hope. But when i think opf the people dying well thats just saddens me to be impressed by a part of a abuilding surviving a earth quake.
BTW i’m in no way blaming God for this quake. Nor am i saying God isn’t good. Maybe he let the cross to survive to give people hope. i Don’t know
 
I think it was Blessed John XXIII who said that “*Any day is a good day to be born, and any day is a good day to die.” *Let’s pray that we can be as well prepared.

sacred? how is a tragic natural disaster sacred? just because i don’t agree with you makes me less responsible? this isn’t china. we have the freedom to disagree.

i’m sorry, but the preservation of the crucifix in a church where many people were killed makes it seem non miraculous to me. if you see a miracle here, you can find one anywhere. this miracle is totally subjective.
 
God is good indeed. This miracle is a true blessing to the people of Peru.

I recall the Carmelite priory in Niagra Falls. When the original building was destroyed in a fire, only a statue of the Blessed Virgin survived.
