As I said above, it wasn’t a funny joke. Pedophilia isn’t a joking matter.

Why do you keep harping on “that’s how people see Catholics anyway?” Who cares?
Did you enjoy the joke and are trying to justify that somehow?

Wow, you’ve got SNL on lock. That’s amazing. So if they are so bad now I wonder why they got an emmy this year? I’m a Gen Xer, by the way, and I agree with what you wrote. I’d say having a spot during “the news” to basically say whatever you want representing the millennials is pretty prime real estate for a young comedian. Hmmm.

Maybe if he said Jews it would make a difference but I doubt it would make a difference if he said muslims

Yes, if he would have said Jews, that would have been it. You don’t make fun of Jews. Or Blacks. Or homosexuals. How can we get Catholics added to the list, do you think?

When I first saw the headline, I was angered. But, TBH I don’t know who he is other than a name that shows up in gossip sites once in while.

I give it a big whatever.

And besides, I haven’t watched SNL in close to 30 years because it stopped being funny and instead got long and reaching and yawn…

Once in a while there’s a good skit that I’ll catch on the replays online, but even then it’s never quite as funny as it seems it should be.

John Prine has it right…

Blow up your t.v. throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find Jesus on your own

Sort of a folk/country version of ‘Going up to the Country’; the Rousseauian dream of dropping out in a bucolic setting.

I would say that wit and Pete Davidson are not only strangers to each other but mortal enemies, which is weird considering his choice of profession.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:10-12
Doesn’t anyone know the Beatitudes? I get so disappointed when people act like we should not be insulted and persecuted. Of course we should, there are some pretty awful people in the Catholic Church, who deserve to be insulted. And if someone does not deserve it, their reward will be great in heaven.

There is no better way to imitate Christ than to accept the outrage of others even though you are innocent.

Pete Davidson is a not so funny comedian who’s father passed away in the 9-11 terrorist attack. He is an avid drug user and has admitted mental health issues. He keeps making statements that get him in trouble and seems to seek out the spotlight in controversy and then cry foul when it turns on him.

All that being said, I saw it and it raised my eyebrows. But what he said was kind of true. And if you take the whole bit in context he reaches the conclusion you can be a Michael Jackson or R Kelly fan as long as you admit what they did. Same can apply and should apply for the Church. You can be a faithful Catholic but we shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand as to what the Church has done.

If it was an SNL clip then maybe it didn’t come from him, it came from the writers. Either way like with any “shock jock” talk it was said to get attention and it worked. Same with Sinead OConnor’s stunt on SNL years ago. Things that are best ignored.

Lack of understanding results in a lack of empathy.
I don’t doubt peoples understanding. They feel you are being complicit because no doubt you are giving money to an organization that uses that money to turn around and do some bad things with it. Until the organization is cleaned up, the can’t understand how members could continue to provide support.

It comes down to money, which most everybody understands.

I used to love SNL too, but now I dislike some of the cast and it’s just not funny anymore.

I think it depends a lot on who the guest is. I can’t remember who it was a few weeks ago, but the show hit every skit–hilarious! And not a single anti-Trump skit, not even on the “news.”

My husband and I had hopes that perhaps the writers had gotten the idea that the public wasn’t laughing, and so decided to try a different approach (actually write something funny!). But the next week, the show was back to being an anti-Trump/anti-conservative diatribe.

So perhaps that particular guest (or maybe the musical guest) leans towards conservative, and the writers put a sock in their usual style.

Last summer, I remember hearing an interview with SNL cast members, and Leslie Jones (one of my favorites) told the story of how she wanted to do a “Trump” skit, bu Loren Michaels wouldn’t allow it. He told her, “Satire is only funny when you don’t HATE the person you’re satirizing”

Perhaps that’s why the show isn’t funny anymore–it’s so obvious that the performers truly HATE Pres. Trump, and so their skits are not funny. So different than when they used to do skits about Pres. Bush (both), Sen. Mondale, Pres. Ford (remember Chey Chase falling down all the time?!), Pres. Obama, etc.?

And then there’s the possibility that Alec Baldwin’s “Pres. Trump” impersonation isn’t that good! I think it’s terrible! Pres. Trump doesn’t shoot his lip out so far that birds could sit on it! But perhaps because of Mr. Baldwin’s past successes on the show (the Christmas skit–don’t think I should say the name here!)–maybe no one associated with the show wants to criticize him. And he did win an Emmy for that portrayal–which again, I’m disgusted at–I think it just goes to show how much the media and entertainment industry hates Pres. Trump. THAT alone should tell us that Pres. Trump is doing a good job!

One more thought about why the show isn’t as funny this season–it’s possible that the writers have forgotten to gear the show towards their traditional audience–the 14-year-old boy! They’re trying to reach out to people that don’t watch the show anyway (e.g., millennials).

Just my ideas. I’m sure there are lots of analyses out there about the show. I hope it can get back on track again next season. They’ll have the primaries to satirize (so far, a couple dozen Democratic hopefuls), so that might help them out.

You are thinking of the show hosted by former writer John mulaney.

Dear HelloKitty,

You correctly perceive we don’t have a validity-of-the-Church problem, we have a woeful personnel and administrative problem at present.

Some newspaper blowhard or telepersonality admonishing you to have some duty to leave the Catholic Church is as laughable as bloviators telling Hillary Clinton she had a duty to divorce wayward Bill back in the day.

Over 20 centuries Jesus’ church has carried on in spite of lousy priests, terrible bishops, bad popes, heretics, sinful brothers and sisters religious. And that’s just the clergy!

It will carry on in spite of what self-important yet fairly ignorant entertainment personalities and media commentators happen to say, as well.
