Pete Davidson vs 20% of America

I am a convert to the faith, I was baptized and entered the church at 19, that was decades ago in the 1980s. When I became Catholic I was struck at how often the church and obvious members of the church were attacked in the media. However to my mind then and ever since that it is a sign of the true church. The church as a spiritual entity is not of the world, we are the Body of Christ and scripture tells us that “the world hated Him because he was not of the world”. As well as the mystical body, the world also attacked the visible body of the church: The Pope, conclaves, meetings, the Vatican, priests etc.

Also plenty of studies have shown that the vast majority of people making and producing content for TV, movies, radio and newspapers and I’m sure all the new electronic forms of sharing media are secular and atheist. The majority of Americans are believers of many faiths but the makers of what we consume do not believe.

Therefore it stands to reason that they don’t understand what the church teaches and they have a tendency to obsess over the church members many sins, crimes, flaws and weaknesses. This will never change.

Actually I think a bishop recently made a comment that he was worried that the church was not being attacked as much as we had been in the past. He thought that was a bad sign as we are supposed to be a contraction to the world, we are not supposed to be accommodated to it.

To anyone in this thread:
Who is R.Kelley and what did he do that makes it a bad thing to be like him?

Pete Davidson had a fantastically funny skit on last weekend, definitely targeted towards the 14-year-old boy! That’s probably why it was so funny! My husband and I have been reciting various phrases of it to each other and cracking up!

It was a satire of a typical teenage slasher movie. Pete was sitting on his sofa watching TV, and looking very “teen”, when he got a creepy phone call from someone who used all the typical teen slasher phone caller phrases–e.g., “Why don’t you look out your window? I’m here!”" etc. They showed the slasher–he was wearing a long black robe and a white mask suggestive of the “Scream” creep (the one in the Scandinavian art piece).

What was so funny is that Pete was so wrapped up in the television that he just answered in short words that made it clear that he didn’t really care who was on the phone. “Yeah?” “OK.” “No.” And he was so pleasant about it–“Oh, thanks!” “Great!”

No matter what the slasher threatened, Pete just blew him off with these one-word answers, and absolutely no fear at all! It’s so funny–after all, that is the one thing that can drive a bully nuts is when you just kind of ignore them!

At one point, the Slasher told Pete to look out on the deck (where he was waiting to scare him). Pete tried to turn on the deck, light, but he couldn’t find the right button and kept turning on the kitchen light, and the living room light, and the hall light. Finally the slasher told him, “Oh, never mind!”

Then the doorbell rang, and the Slasher told Pete to go answer the door! He did, and it was a pizza man with a big pizza! Pete said, “Oh, pizza! Thanks!” and took the pizza and turned away. He didn’t see that the pizza delivery man had a slashed-up, bloody belly, and collapsed, leaving a bloody hand print trail on the window! Pete was back on the sofa eating the pizza. At one point he tipped it onto the floor by accident, but just kept eating his pizza slice and watching the TV.

Then the Slasher appeared and revealed himself as a teen who was apparently dissed by Pete at school, and whose girlfriend had been stolen by Pete. Again, Pete just kept saying, “Oh, sorry.” “My bad.” “OK.”

Eventually the Slasher tried to lunge at Pete with a giant knife, but slipped on a piece of the pizza and impaled himself.

It was hilarious! It totally wrecked any Slasher movies for me in the future (although generally speaking, I don’t watch Slasher movies because they’re so terrifying!).

It was a great character–the teen who blows everything off and answers in monosyllables and stays pleasantly non-connected to everything. Our 3 nephews are exactly like that, so the skit was very “real” and that’s why it succeeded.

I hope the writers keep giving Pete great skits like that. For that matter, the entire show was funny, and very few anti-Trump jokes. Someone at the show is paying attention to the audience again.

I think it depends a lot on who the guest is. I can’t remember who it was a few weeks ago, but the show hit every skit–hilarious! And not a single anti-Trump skit, not even on the “news.”

My husband and I had hopes that perhaps the writers had gotten the idea that the public wasn’t laughing, and so decided to try a different approach (actually write something funny!). But the next week, the show was back to being an anti-Trump/anti-conservative diatribe.

So perhaps that particular guest (or maybe the musical guest) leans towards conservative, and the writers put a sock in their usual style.

Last summer, I remember hearing an interview with SNL cast members, and Leslie Jones (one of my favorites) told the story of how she wanted to do a “Trump” skit, bu Loren Michaels wouldn’t allow it. He told her, “Satire is only funny when you don’t HATE the person you’re satirizing”

Perhaps that’s why the show isn’t funny anymore–it’s so obvious that the performers truly HATE Pres. Trump, and so their skits are not funny. So different than when they used to do skits about Pres. Bush (both), Sen. Mondale, Pres. Ford (remember Chey Chase falling down all the time?!), Pres. Obama, etc.?

And then there’s the possibility that Alec Baldwin’s “Pres. Trump” impersonation isn’t that good! I think it’s terrible! Pres. Trump doesn’t shoot his lip out so far that birds could sit on it! But perhaps because of Mr. Baldwin’s past successes on the show (the Christmas skit–don’t think I should say the name here!)–maybe no one associated with the show wants to criticize him. And he did win an Emmy for that portrayal–which again, I’m disgusted at–I think it just goes to show how much the media and entertainment industry hates Pres. Trump. THAT alone should tell us that Pres. Trump is doing a good job!

One more thought about why the show isn’t as funny this season–it’s possible that the writers have forgotten to gear the show towards their traditional audience–the 14-year-old boy! They’re trying to reach out to people that don’t watch the show anyway (e.g., millennials).

Just my ideas. I’m sure there are lots of analyses out there about the show. I hope it can get back on track again next season. They’ll have the primaries to satirize (so far, a couple dozen Democratic hopefuls), so that might help them out.
Balwin’s portrayal was amusing the first couple of times but it got very stale quickly after that. IMO

My husband and I agree with you!

It’s a shame–Alec Baldwin has done some of the funniest skits ever on SNL (the one in which he owns a bakery–I’m not sure if I can spell it out on this board without it getting censored). He’s got a lot of talent. But as Loren Michaels’ said–“it’s not funny if you hate the person you’re satirizing.” It’s so obvious that Mr. Baldwin absolutely despises Pres. Trump, and that makes his portrayal funny only to those who also hate the President.
