You believe that Peter received authority from the Lord to direct his church.
Others are doing well on this thread but just to augment the point, we cite John 21 – the “tend my sheep” passage and Luke 22:32: “Strengthen your brethren” in support of Peter’s role.
But authority and the keys to the preisthood have nothing to do with each other ?
I believe the notion of “keys to the priesthood” has been addressed. The keys are not specifically “keys to the priesthood.”
Peter died and did not have to directly give his keys or authority to a new pope through laying on of hands or anointing or anything because it is a CHAIR or office and after a person dies the office remains, so it is just there open with all the authority and keys waiting to be filled by election of man.
We believe the Holy Spirit is in charge of the papal election. Every conclave begins with a Mass of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised His protection to His Church; it is not “man” acting without the Spirit.
So even though the 12 apostles which included John were ordained by the Lord having hands layed upon, Peter gave the authority but not by ordination, to a new Pope over John an acting apostle who still held authority and was still receiving revelations.
I do not recall that Jesus laid hands on anybody except some of those whom he healed. The priesthood is instituted by the washing of the feet at the Last Supper, where Jesus commands them to celebrate the Eucharist: “Do this in remembrance of me.” Apostolic authority is “breathed” upon them in Jn 20:20-23 when he gives them the Holy Spirit “as the Father has sent me, so I send you” for misson and for the forgiveness of sins.
From the death of John there has been no further revelations on earth except for personal revelation which the church has a right to say whether it happened or not ?
Where does this idea come from? Personal revelations are not required for acceptance by the faithful; the Church discerns whether they are “worthy” of belief but they never rise to the level of *de fide *doctrine.
If this is all correct then what is the difference between authority and the keys ? authority for what and keys for what ?
In Mt. 16, The keys are the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Because confession (John 20) restores the sinner to grace, we understand that the keys are exercised when a priest pronounces absolution and releases that soul from its sin, renderng him fit for Heaven. The keys are applied to “binding and loosing” doctrine as well and the other Apostles and their successors share that power when acting in unity with Peter.
I have always been intrigued by the fact that Jesus promises the keys of the kingdom of heaven to Peter but retains for Himself the keys of death and Hades in Rev 1:18l. In other words, Peter can open the gates of heaven to loose sinners from the consequences of sin but only Jesus may judge a person for Hell.
Because it is my understanding that the Keys to the kingdom of Heaven IS the priesthood. And to receive the priesthood or have authority to act in the name of God, you must be anointed and have hands layed upon your head and be consecrated to the Lord by one of the Lords disciples or one that has been anointed by one of the Lords disciples thus on down the line. With this priesthood you are then have the authority or power of healing, blessing, binding and losing etc. That without this anointing there is no authority to minister in the priests office and that it is an everlasting priesthood ?
Close! Very close! The power of the keys, for Catholics, resides fully in the hands of Peter and his successors. The power of ‘binding and loosing’ in general for the forgiveness of sins is shared among all the Apostles and those in apostolic succession.
The place where the power of the keys touches the forgiveness of sins is the place where the
teaching mission of the Church to establish doctrine touches the
pastoral mission. The power of the keys to establish doctrine
relates to the discernment of
what constitutes sin in specific detail and how it is to be forgiven or retained. Thus even though all successors of the apostles receive the power of binding and loosing and of forgiving sins, the unity of their actions resides in communion with Peter…
The one with the Ultimate keys has the authority to receive revelation and direction for all of the church, yet all other priesthood holders have authority to receive personal revelation only.
“Ultimate keys?” Others have mentioned that Revelation is closed. Personal revelation is a technical term in the Catholic Church and never rises to the level of a teaching mandate. What the Church receives through the Holy Spirit, is the ability to discern what is to be taught.
Consider: We in this life do not have all the
questions yet. All the
answers are somehow embedded in Scripture and Tradition, but the Church discerns them on a “need-to-know” basis by the guidance of the Holy Spirit – as it did in discerning the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and in closing the canon of Scripture.

The Priesthood is Christ’s own priesthood. Yes: eternal, as you say: “after the Order of Melchizedech.”
