well then this explains why there are corrupt Popes all throught the ages and why they can not keep the fundamental principles the same ? because The Lord is not directly directing the Catholic church ? the MEN or popes themselves are making these decisions without revelation from the Lord ?
I’m confused. Which one of these corrupt popes (all through the ages?!?) taught a new doctrine? Can you clarify this, please?
Why are the popes not set up like Christs church was set up on the earth ? with Jesus and then 12 apostles ? When the 1st Apostle dies, the 2nd succeeds him immediately, and the remaining apostles through prayer and revelation select the lowest incoming apostle ? There is NEVER a moment of not having a guiding Apostle ?
But that’s not how it was. Jesus gave the office to Peter, just as God did to Eliakim. It was an office.

But the remaining Apostles did NOT select the incoming Apostle. God did.

Where ARE you getting your facts???

You are the only one making this claim. No one else does.

Jesus gave the keys to Peter. Peter established that the Apostles held an office. Offices remain after the person leaves (or dies). Hence, the office, with the keys, is still there.

Let me ask you. Has the need for the keys been relinquished? Or are the gates of hell still attacking Christ’s Church?
They keys are given to perform preisthood ordinaces with authority from God, there will always be need for them. I dont think it has anything to do with the gates of hell ?

Do you not believe in laying on of hands ? How does your Pope or Bishops or fathers receive their preisthood power to perform ordinances? Is that not the passing on of keys to perform for the Lord ?

Even when we have a new president we hold an official inauguration (excuse the spelling) putting him into office ? a passing of the keys or authority so to speak.

They keys are given to perform preisthood ordinaces with authority from God, there will always be need for them. I dont think it has anything to do with the gates of hell ?
Hmmmm… But Jesus gives the power of the priesthood to all the Apostles - not in Matthew 18, but at the Last Supper. Matthew 18 is the assignation of authority. Simply read the entire chapter to get the context. So, Matthew 18 is about authority, the Last Supper scenes are about passing on the new Priesthood.

But, to your point, the keys are only given to one person, not to all Twelve.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

I’m going to build my Church and protect it from falling away from Me and being overcome by Satan. And how am I going to insure that, Peter? I’m going to place you in authority.

I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. *** Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The binding and loosing are authority, something Peter demonstrates quite regularly in Acts, like no other Apostle does. And the keys are the symbol of authority. Simply look at Isaiah 22 to see that the keys denote authority, not priesthood:

I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family.

Notice, Eliakim is not a priest. He’s the Prime Minister. The keys do not have anything to do with the priesthood in and of themselves.
Do you not believe in laying on of hands ? How does your Pope or Bishops or fathers receive their preisthood power to perform ordinances? Is that not the passing on of keys to perform for the Lord ?
The laying on of hands, in this context, denotes the priestly order, not authority.
Even when we have a new president we hold an official inauguration (excuse the spelling) putting him into office ? a passing of the keys or authority so to speak.
So, only the President holds the keys even though there are numerous people of authority in our government? Doesn’t that disprove your very own point?!?

But, I must admit, now that you’ve changed your attitude and decided to discuss this honestly, it is more pleasant. Thank you!!!

the Last Supper scenes are about passing on the new Priesthood.
But, to your point, the keys are only given to one person, not to all Twelve.

QUOTE]

So let me see if I understand the catholic views or Doctrine ?

You believe that Peter received authority from the Lord to direct his church.

But authority and the keys to the preisthood have nothing to do with each other ?

Peter died and did not have to directly give his keys or authority to a new pope through laying on of hands or anointing or anything because it is a CHAIR or office and after a person dies the office remains, so it is just there open with all the authority and keys waiting to be filled by election of man.

So even though the 12 apostles which included John were ordained by the Lord having hands layed upon, Peter gave the authority but not by ordination, to a new Pope over John an acting apostle who still held authority and was still receiving revelations.

From the death of John there has been no further revelations on earth except for personal revelation which the church has a right to say whether it happened or not ?

If this is all correct then what is the difference between authority and the keys ? authority for what and keys for what ?

Because it is my understanding that the Keys to the kingdom of Heaven IS the priesthood. And to receive the priesthood or have authority to act in the name of God, you must be anointed and have hands layed upon your head and be consecrated to the Lord by one of the Lords disciples or one that has been anointed by one of the Lords disciples thus on down the line. With this priesthood you are then have the authority or power of healing, blessing, binding and losing etc. That without this anointing there is no authority to minister in the priests office and that it is an everlasting priesthood ?

The one with the Ultimate keys has the authority to receive revelation and direction for all of the church, yet all other priesthood holders have authority to receive personal revelation only.

Exodus 40:
15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.

Mark 3:
14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

Matt 10:
1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Matt 16:
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Lev. 16: 32
32 And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest’s office in his father’s stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:

Num. 3: 3
3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office.

Isaiah 61:
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

So let me see if I understand the catholic views or Doctrine ?

You believe that Peter received authority from the Lord to direct his church.
Absolutely. How else would you interpret Matthew 16?
But authority and the keys to the preisthood have nothing to do with each other ?
The authority and the priesthood happen to be given to the same people. But they were explicitly given separately. Notice in the OT, the authority and the priesthood were separate powers given to separate groups.

They are united in Christ. And He gives these united authorities (or powers) to the same group of people, but He does it separately.
Peter died and did not have to directly give his keys or authority to a new pope through laying on of hands or anointing or anything because it is a CHAIR or office and after a person dies the office remains, so it is just there open with all the authority and keys waiting to be filled by election of man.
Just as Judas’ office (or bishopric) are passed on after Judas’ death.

If the keys had to be given directly, as you seem to be questioning, the premature death of a pope, without his assigning a successor, would nullify the entire papacy.
So even though the 12 apostles which included John were ordained by the Lord having hands layed upon, Peter gave the authority but not by ordination, to a new Pope over John an acting apostle who still held authority and was still receiving revelations.
That’s correct. No one claimed that only the Apostles had authority. No one claimed that only the Apostles had Revelation (Simply look at Luke to prove that). No one claimed that only the Apostles could be priests.

And remember, people can still receive private revelations today.
From the death of John there has been no further revelations on earth except for personal revelation which the church has a right to say whether it happened or not ?
If this is all correct then what is the difference between authority and the keys ? authority for what and keys for what ?
The Authority is the authority. The keys are the symbol of that authority.
That is correct regarding the need for laying on of hands being necessary for the priesthood. Thank God the Catholic Church can make this claim for every priest She has ever had.

But a priest does not have the authority to bind or loose as in Matthew 16. He can forgive or retain someone’s sins, which is one of the facets of binding and loosing, but that is only because the Church hierchy gave the priests that authority.
The one with the Ultimate keys has the authority to receive revelation and direction for all of the church, yet all other priesthood holders have authority to receive personal revelation only.
But Jesus never says the keys denote ability to receive revelation.

Where in Scripture does it claim that?

I showed you in Scripture where, in Matthew 16 and Isaiah 22, the keys are specifically associated with authority only. Eliakim in Isaiah 22 is not a priest whatsoever. How could he have the keys, according to the rules you’ve laid out? He was never a priest or a prophet.
Isaiah 61:
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
All this Scripture supports the priesthood, yes.

But, it is completely silent on the link between the keys and the priesthood or the link between the keys and divine revelation.

Just a note on Paul–while Christ appeared to him and commissioned him, he still had to receive the laying on of hands and be sent by the other Apostles and he specifically had to have his preaching confirmed by Cephas/Peter.

Likewise, it would be wrong to say only Peter and his successors speak for God–rather all the Apostles and all the bishops have this ministry. However, they must do so in union with Peter and they must preach the same faith as Peter’s (and his successors) for it to be legimate. Jesus prays only for his faith to fail not and makes him and his profession of faith the unshakeable rock, then he in turn is to confirm or strengthen the rest.

I hope that helps!

You believe that Peter received authority from the Lord to direct his church.
Others are doing well on this thread but just to augment the point, we cite John 21 – the “tend my sheep” passage and Luke 22:32: “Strengthen your brethren” in support of Peter’s role.
But authority and the keys to the preisthood have nothing to do with each other ?
I believe the notion of “keys to the priesthood” has been addressed. The keys are not specifically “keys to the priesthood.”
Peter died and did not have to directly give his keys or authority to a new pope through laying on of hands or anointing or anything because it is a CHAIR or office and after a person dies the office remains, so it is just there open with all the authority and keys waiting to be filled by election of man.
We believe the Holy Spirit is in charge of the papal election. Every conclave begins with a Mass of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised His protection to His Church; it is not “man” acting without the Spirit.
So even though the 12 apostles which included John were ordained by the Lord having hands layed upon, Peter gave the authority but not by ordination, to a new Pope over John an acting apostle who still held authority and was still receiving revelations.
I do not recall that Jesus laid hands on anybody except some of those whom he healed. The priesthood is instituted by the washing of the feet at the Last Supper, where Jesus commands them to celebrate the Eucharist: “Do this in remembrance of me.” Apostolic authority is “breathed” upon them in Jn 20:20-23 when he gives them the Holy Spirit “as the Father has sent me, so I send you” for misson and for the forgiveness of sins.
From the death of John there has been no further revelations on earth except for personal revelation which the church has a right to say whether it happened or not ?
Where does this idea come from? Personal revelations are not required for acceptance by the faithful; the Church discerns whether they are “worthy” of belief but they never rise to the level of *de fide *doctrine.
If this is all correct then what is the difference between authority and the keys ? authority for what and keys for what ?
In Mt. 16, The keys are the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Because confession (John 20) restores the sinner to grace, we understand that the keys are exercised when a priest pronounces absolution and releases that soul from its sin, renderng him fit for Heaven. The keys are applied to “binding and loosing” doctrine as well and the other Apostles and their successors share that power when acting in unity with Peter.

I have always been intrigued by the fact that Jesus promises the keys of the kingdom of heaven to Peter but retains for Himself the keys of death and Hades in Rev 1:18l. In other words, Peter can open the gates of heaven to loose sinners from the consequences of sin but only Jesus may judge a person for Hell.
Close! Very close! The power of the keys, for Catholics, resides fully in the hands of Peter and his successors. The power of ‘binding and loosing’ in general for the forgiveness of sins is shared among all the Apostles and those in apostolic succession.

The place where the power of the keys touches the forgiveness of sins is the place where the teaching mission of the Church to establish doctrine touches the pastoral mission. The power of the keys to establish doctrine relates to the discernment of what constitutes sin in specific detail and how it is to be forgiven or retained. Thus even though all successors of the apostles receive the power of binding and loosing and of forgiving sins, the unity of their actions resides in communion with Peter…
The one with the Ultimate keys has the authority to receive revelation and direction for all of the church, yet all other priesthood holders have authority to receive personal revelation only.
“Ultimate keys?” Others have mentioned that Revelation is closed. Personal revelation is a technical term in the Catholic Church and never rises to the level of a teaching mandate. What the Church receives through the Holy Spirit, is the ability to discern what is to be taught.

Consider: We in this life do not have all the questions yet. All the answers are somehow embedded in Scripture and Tradition, but the Church discerns them on a “need-to-know” basis by the guidance of the Holy Spirit – as it did in discerning the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and in closing the canon of Scripture.

[Scriptural quotes on priesthood deleted to save space]

The Priesthood is Christ’s own priesthood. Yes: eternal, as you say: “after the Order of Melchizedech.”

Wow… this thread makes me glad I am Catholic and that i have had good bible study!

First… Jesus gave Peter the Keys… Keys = authority… specifically the authority to rule in his place (in absentio) on earth.

Binding and loosing… ability to set doctrine or “rules” also given to Peter

Forgiving sins is also a part of binding and loosing… but it is further reinforced as something the priests (apostles) all do in James 5 where the correlation to sin and health are made.

When the apostle Judas dies… how is a new one selected? By casting lots… and why?.. because that was the apostles way of determining God’s will. They believed that God would choose and show them.

Also… If Paul didn’t need to be received into the priesthood…i.e. had his own authority from Christ… then why did he work so hard at getting accepted by the apostles since they all feared him and distrusted him at first?.. Because Jesus instituted the laying on of hands and it was continued by the apostles…

Just a clarification. Its a common misunderstanding that “casting lots” means each Apostle voting for the successor. Casting lots meant something like flipping a coin (in today’s world). The Apostles were trusting the choice of Judas’s replacement to God.

Blest One, I’m not saying you thought wrong. I’m just taking this opportunity to explain a commonly mis-held belief (one that I once had myself).

Sorry I should have clarified… I did know but just assumed everyone else did too… my bad! 😃

Well, you may not have needed to clarify, but I think one of meaprilrain’s rants indicated this way of thinking. It’s sort of like the Immaculate Conception, sometimes it needs to be pointed out just who was the Immaculately Conceived?

Im sorry, I am really having a hard time understanding .

Is there just one priesthood ?

Who holds the priesthood in the catholic church ? the pope, the priests, the fathers, all the individual males ??

What powers does the priesthood give them , or what do they do with the priesthood ?

What are the keys ? who holds them and what do they do with them ?

How are you defining authority ? and what is the authority for ? who holds this authority ?

Im just trying to understand because my priesthood is 2 fold. All Worthy males may hold both. With the highest they may perform all ordinaces, baptism, confirmations and laying on of hands for the holy ghost. Healing the sick etc. anyone may receive personal revelation from God for themselves and their family, but only the Prophet may receive revelation for the church and congregation as a whole.

The keys are the keys to the priesthood which holds the key to the ordinances for eternal life.
Authority comes from having the ordinations performed by one with authority. Passed on and on.

Example, your child may not go out to play without authority from you. Why you? You are his parent. The neighbor does not have the authority to tell him he can. Thus Someone holding the highest priesthood now is the only one that can ordane another with the priesthood. Their authority comes from already having the power and keys of the priesthood.

How is the priesthood bestowed ? by oil anointing and laying on of hands by at least 2 others that hold the highest priesthood.

Now help me understand how your authority and priesthood operates.

Im sorry, I am really having a hard time understanding .

Is there just one priesthood ?
First of all, do you answer anything asked of you at all?!? 😉

There are multiple layers of priests.

There is of course, Jesus, our High Priest.

But to really answer your question,
  1. We are a nation of priests.
  2. There are priests who celebrate the Mass (amongst a myriad of other tasks, forgive and retain, and all that).
  3. There are Bishops who form the Magisterium.

Im sorry, I am really having a hard time understanding .

What are the keys ? who holds them and what do they do with them ?
I thought I’ve explained this already. It’s the authority to Bind and Loose.

This allows the Church to:
a) Make and Lift Disciplines - this is evidenced in Acts 15, when James gives the 4 Noahide restrictions on Gentiles, but Paul, in Galatians, explains that these restrictions have been lifted.
b) Forgive and Retain sins - This is explained in John 20.
c) Teach Infallibly regarding Faith and Morals - Examples of this are found in Acts 1 - when Peter establishes the need to fill Judas’ office, Acts 9(-ish) - when Peter opens the Church to Gentiles, and Acts 15 - when Peter establishes that the Gentiles are not subject to Mosaic Laws.
How are you defining authority ? and what is the authority for ? who holds this authority ?
Now that I’ve answered yours, will you answer why you think that the keys are associated with
a) the priesthood
b) Revelation.

Where does Scripture explain this?
Im just trying to understand because my priesthood is 2 fold. All Worthy males may hold both. What about forgiveness of sins?

Numerous questions, but first and foremost, where in Scriptures are the keys linked to the priesthood and revelation.
A key is something that gives access to something or opens something. The keys are just a figure of speech. They are essentially the same thing as authority. If you have authority to go in the house then you have the keys to go in the house.
You receive the keys or authority by having the priesthood bestowed on you. With the priesthood you have the keys or authority to receive revelation. I am sorry I have no bible references to give you, all the scripture references I have come from other books and writings. honestly keys is only mentioned like 8 times in the bible and priesthood only like 10 times ?

I am not here to defend my faith, but to ask about yours. My faith does not stem only from the bible. But I understand that I must have only bible quotes for this forum to follow and believe 

So now could you please explain how the priesthood works in your church ? If you are not interested in answering questions that is ok I will try another member that looks like they also have experience and knowledge.

You are half-right. The keys denote authority, yes.

But the keys are not directly linked to the priesthood. Isaiah 22 clearly shows this. Remember, God is speaking in his passage:
On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open.
Notice, again, Eliakim is not a priest. Note also, “He shall be a Father…”. The word “Pope” means “Father”. But the entire theme of this passage is authority.

But there is no priesthood here, even though there are keys.
I am sorry I have no bible references to give you, all the scripture references I have come from other books and writings. honestly keys is only mentioned like 8 times in the bible and priesthood only like 10 times ?
But, if you are a Bible Christian, you have to develop your link with the keys and the priesthood from the Bible. Any other source means its a “Tradition of Man”. And any good Catholic Apologist will tell you this, because it’s been thrown at us a kazillion times by Bible Christians! 😉

Priests today are most closely linked with the “elders” of the Bible.
I am not here to defend my faith, but to ask about yours. My faith does not stem only from the bible. But I understand that I must have only bible quotes for this forum to follow and believe 
Well, it seems that you have to have either Scripture or Sacred Tradition. If you’re not Catholic or Orthodox, then it would seem that you certainly don’t have Sacred Tradition, which means all that is left is Scripture.
So now could you please explain how the priesthood works in your church ? If you are not interested in answering questions that is ok I will try another member that looks like they also have experience and knowledge.
First of all, look at my previous answer. I gave you at least seven roles of the priesthood. I’ll point it out again if you want.

But, second of all, the roles of the priesthood belong on another thread.

I will go back and look through your posts on the priesthood. It is so extremely different from my understandings now. So which thread or forum or where should I go for the trinity since this is my hardest to swallow !!??
