The Naked Archeaologist is promoting a show to air 4/2 that claims that the remains of St. Peter are found in Jeruselum, as opposed to Rome. I think this is the same guy who was instrumental in the Jesus tomb fallacy. Does anyone have any info on his latest controversy?

I like the Naked Archaeologist, he’s actually had some pretty good shows that support Biblical (both OT and NT) history, but the fact that he’s teaming up with James Cameron of Titanic lore and the Jesus ossuary fiasco makes me be a little less optimistic about the show.

I guess someone will report what he has to say and how credible his findings are.

I thought the Church was pretty certain that Peter’s bones were buried under the Vatican.

I don’t trust the guy, neither his methods nor his motives. I saw one of his shows where he was trying to establish the time and route of Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egypt, and the way he arrived at his conclusions was about as unscientific as anything I’ve ever come across. He is entertaining, though.

I saw the show. Its the usual sensationalism-type thing, trying to get viewers. Its only his opinion that the artifacts in Jerusalem are Peter’s. The priest who ducked the interview with the film-maker made himself look bad, though. I saw nothing that convinced me that St. Peter’s remains are not 30’ below the main altar at St. Peter’s Basilica. What he’s doing in this show is only a cheap publicity stunt, in my opinion. Roanoker

I haven’t seen the particular show but my impression is that the NA, who travels with a Canadian passport (it’s in the opening sequence of the show) but whose origins are Israeli, tends to favor outcomes that cast doubt on Christianity and/or reinforce Judaism.

His own personal biases are pretty obvious when his entire series is viewed as a whole. And he’s not actually an archaeologist, he’s a journalist, at least officially. 😉

This is a classic case of confusion. There is no proof that Simon Bar Jonah’s ossuary was the same Simon Bar Jonah that was renamed Peter or Cephas.

From what I understand, the name “Cephas” does no appear on the ossuary. If God changed my name to Peter, I would put it on my tombstone. I don’t know why Peter (or whoever buried him) wouldn’t do the same.

I am waiting for some outlandish book or documentary to come out theorizing that the Vatican disbanded the Knights Templar because they knew where Peter died.

I watched the show. It starts with quoting the Bible where Jesus renames Peter and gives him the keys to the kingdom.

It then discusses how Peter’s bones where found in the Vatican.

Then it talks about how Peter’s skull is in a different place and the bones found in the Vatican and that the bones found in the Vatican did not have a skull with them. It discusses how testing has found the skull and bones do not genetically match.

The last place the show goes is to Jerusalem to speak the group that has an ossuary that says Simon son of Jonah, but they will not meet with them. The way they describe this ossuary makes it sound like it is not a new find.

It concludes with saying that walking with the Saints is more important than which relics are what.

For a half hour edutainment show, it was not bad. It also presented a very Catholic view of what authority Peter was given by Jesus and the importance of the Saints.

If Peter’s remains are NOT under the Altar at St. Peter’s in Rome then would someone please explain to me whose bones they are…it was a senior citizen of middleeast extraction who had his feet cut off (consistent with upside down crucifixion, fastest way down, but the feet off).

I forgot to include that the program also talked about the feet being missing from the remains under the Alter at St. Peter’s and that it was consistent with being crucified upside down.
