This is why I’m so torn over it. Money isn’t an issue as far as caring for them and getting the proper medical treatment. We don’t have a no kill shelter anywhere near where I live, which is a very rural area.

I’ll find out tomorrow if she is indeed pregnant and if so build her a better shelter to take care of kittens. Then get her spayed as soon as possible after as well as get the kittens fixed when they are old enough.
I think that is the wisest decision, medically speaking, if she is indeed pregnant.

May God bless your efforts to help her and do this without risking harming her. 🙂

You might want to ask your vet also if the cat is pregnant if possibly there’s a foster family that could take her or if the vets office handles any adoptions. We don’t live in a rural area but the dog we adopted st the humane shelter was from California and sent here in Utah so possibly the shelter closest to you, even if it’s not a no kill shelter might do this.

I too used to feed feral cats but too.

They began multiplying. The dog we had at that time didn’t like cats, and we had a neighbor we suspected might be poisoning them.

We checked with our humane shelter and they told us if we were feeding them then they considered you owned them! They suggested setting traps out. Then they collect the cats, spay them, and then release them. That way they don’t multiply. We did do that with a few, but the tney disappeared. I also hate to see them loose and uncared for, and it’s a hard decision to make if the cats pregnant. You might want to check with them to see if they’d do this. If I didn’t have a husband insure I’d still be going this today, and probably have a few cats too.

My daughter also lives in a rural area and has several cats but one turned rogue and didn’t get along with the other two. Someone eventually adopted him though. Sometimes farmers are looking for good mousers, and may want to adopt.

This may seem like a very silly question but I do need opinions. I have a wonderful house cat that is very well taken care of. I’ve been feeding some feral cats near my house (I live out in the country) and this winter a stray kitten showed up. I know she isn’t feral as she will let me pick her up and pet her. She has to stay outside, my inside cat won’t tolerate another cat in the house. I made her a safe warm bed, feed her daily separately from the feral cats.

Today I was petting her and noticed some changes. I think she may be pregnant. My dilemma is I want have her aborted. I feel horrible for wanting to not have kittens but I don’t know if I could give them away and I don’t want to add to the problem of over population with cats. One of the feral cats had kittens last fall and despite providing them with a warm safe space well away from people I believe the kittens have died, I haven’t seen them for a couple of months.

Am I wrong here?

For the record I am 100% pro-life from conception to natural death in regards to people.
I don’t like the idea of aborting kittens just because it’s a cat and “lesser” than humans.

I realize it’s not the same in regards to morality, sometimes there is no other choice. but still…

but it just doesn’t sit well with me. avoid doing that if you can. and especially if it’s dangerous to the animal too

I found something in the Catechism that might be helpful for this.
Catechism of the Catholic Church:
2415 The seventh commandment enjoins respect for the integrity of creation. Animals, like plants and inanimate beings, are by nature destined for the common good of past, present, and future humanity.195 Use of the mineral, vegetable, and animal resources of the universe cannot be divorced from respect for moral imperatives. Man’s dominion over inanimate and other living beings granted by the Creator is not absolute; it is limited by concern for the quality of life of his neighbor, including generations to come; it requires a religious respect for the integrity of creation.196

2416 **Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory.197 Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.
**
2417 God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image.198 Hence it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. They may be domesticated to help man in his work and leisure. Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.

2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery. One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection due only to persons.

Moral issue aside, and speaking from strictly a medical perspective

(My sister is a retired vet tech)

An cat/dog will possibly bleed to death if a spay is done while they are pregnant because of the blood flow to the uterus.

vetinfo.com/should-pregnant-cats-be-spayed.html
They are done every day of the week here. Cats neutered right up till the last few days of pregnancy. The Uterus is removed. Its safer then the tiny cat having much more complicated options late at night when trying to give birth.

Please dont be put off. Your cat
ives outside, you most likely wont be there to help, wont know when the cat is in trouble while giving birth. Its also so much cheaper desexing now, then emergency caeser and losing cat and kittens

If you can be there and know if she is in trouble , and race her to a vet at 2am, then you have choices. If the answer is no to these questions, do what is right for the little cat you want to keep.

I have watched too many animal births go wrong , with horrible suffering.

Also with her being desexed remember she w8ll need to be locked up inside for 10 days till the stitches come out. Can you buy a decent size dog crate you can put her in and a litter box inside?

UPDATE…Took the cat to my vet and not only is she pregnant but only a week or two from having her babies. I ordered a pet play yard to put in the garage with blankets, a litter box, and a small pet crate so she has a box to have the kittens in when it’s time.

I’ll have to keep them in the play yard at least until she is done nursing and I can get her spayed

Thanks for the update, Horton. 🙂

Hoping all goes well. I have been wondering all day.

I just ordered it yesterday and it will arrive on Tuesday. I plan to get it all set up no later than Wednesday and put her in it.

The vet didn’t say but I grew up on a farm so I know to basically let her do it on her own but to keep an eye on her in case she gets into trouble.

I wish more people had your heart towards strays.

God bless you!

I was able to find a no-kill shelter for cats and sent a message asking if they would be willing to take momma and her babies after they are 3-4 weeks old. I’ll never be able to bring them in the house so it will be best for them to go to a real home. I would hate to keep them here and them possibly becoming feral or worse prey for some of the natural predators we have out here.

I pray that all goes well with everything, and that the no-kill shelter will be able to help out, Horton.

May God bless you for your efforts, Horton. You’re a good soul. ❤️

There was a stray kitten my roommate and I were feeding last year and eventually she brought him indoors. My, but he seemed to be a holy terror the first few days. But the vet said he would make a good cat, and now he has become my nighttime companion! 🐈🌘 Hope all the babies have a safe birth (momma too) and find wonderful furever homes! 🏡

Are you sure your male cat won’t tolerate a female kitten? At any rate, I hope she has a safe delivery. Maybe your Church bulletin can mention the kitties plight.

I know my male cat won’t tolerate her in the house. I have her nursery set up with everything she’ll need to have her kittens. I’m hoping at one time she was litter trained or instinctively knows to use the litter box. Once the kittens are born I’ll try to place her with a no-kill shelter I found that’s not too far from me or try to give them away through social media or word of mouth.

For now she is safe and we’re just waiting.

Her nursery and pet play yard… awwwh, too cute. That cat was so lucky to find you. Well, all the best and keep us posted!

So has anything happened Horton? You will post a pic won’t you?
