It depends on the reason, if its done purely for tourism/money purposes then of course then the Bishops have a point, however if it is undertaken as a devotional exercise or in thanksgiving for a particular favour then I have no problem with it.

I remember reading about a man who had done this 25 years in a row in thanksgiving after problems with his wife’s pregnency were resolved.

The trouble is: i think that these re-enactments are LITERAL re-enactments, which means LITERAL scourging and LITERAL crucifixion using spikes.

A year or so back, i came across a Muslim YouTube propaganda video showing this actual thing taking place in the Philippines. Of course, the inference was that this barbaric, and often fatal, “devotional practice” is a part of orthodox Christianity.

If you search YouTube, you might even find this video. i came across it by chance, and don`t remember how.

What about the Fifth Commandment? Voluntary mutilation`s not on.
 
I don’t know what drives those in the Phillipines to flagellate themselves and have themselves crucified. They call it an act of devotion, but I feel it’s barbaric. It’s just my personal opinion.
 
Yup I am aware that it is literal, as for the thing about voluntary mutlitation you should read what about the physical pennances of Peter Damian and St Cecilia in the high middle ages.

The earlier saints weren`t exposed to the glare of the anti-Catholic “news” media. They were lucky(!). It was private. Still hurt though!

Having spikes driven through the hands/wrists and feet does violence (pun intended) to the Fifth Commandment.
Plus it provides ammo for Fundamentalists and all of the other anti-Catholic sects around the place.
