The trouble is: i think that these re-enactments are LITERAL re-enactments, which means LITERAL scourging and LITERAL crucifixion using spikes.It depends on the reason, if its done purely for tourism/money purposes then of course then the Bishops have a point, however if it is undertaken as a devotional exercise or in thanksgiving for a particular favour then I have no problem with it.
I remember reading about a man who had done this 25 years in a row in thanksgiving after problems with his wife’s pregnency were resolved.
The earlier saints weren`t exposed to the glare of the anti-Catholic “news” media. They were lucky(!). It was private.
