Let me just say that the election of Tagle would be a rebuke to the civil government of the Philippines, in the light of their attempt to subsidize contraception and their other anticlerical moves lately (though not to the extent of the United States, thank God for small mercies). A well deserved rebuke.

I’m sorry, but it was humility that lost us centuries-old papal ceremonies and robbed the church of significant dignity. The church is not simply a servant of the poor and downtrodden, it is a spiritual authority and the voice of God’s Word on Earth.

Reaching out is good. But the RCC has humbled itself enough since PVI.

What does that even mean, bring the Church closer to the people? How isn’t that already the case, with the ginormous volume of medical, housing, food, shelter and other services that we give to the world? What does that mean, with the education we give to children of the world? So again, what does that even mean, bring the Church closer to the people? Some things sound nice, but when you think about them, they don’t really make a whole lot of sense.

Ditto…and AMEN

Yeah, “what the hell are you even saying” is something I find myself saying a lot these days.

You’re right, it’s not a servant of the poor and downtrodden; the Church is a servant to the poor and downtrodden, the wealthy, the middle class and all. While yes the Church is indeed a monarchy, Jesus did not come to create an aristocratic European style monarchy. Yes the Church is the voice of God’s Word on Earth, but the Church is for everyone.

I’m skeptical when I see comments from this Bishop though, it does seem to lean in a rather simplistic borderline liberation theology direction, but I must say that there is nothing wrong with the Papacy as the suffering servant for all peoples.

I probably shouldn’t LOL at that, but I did. LOL

And if this is any indication on how clear he would be as a Pope…

I expect it means what we usually mean when we talk about “conservative” clerics: that he is at least minimally obedient to the Church and beyond that, who really knows.

I don’t think he has much of a record for the cardinals to judge his qualities by. He has been the bishop of Manila only for a few months. Not that I wouldn’t like to have a third-world Pope. Just that they would not be able to evaluate his qualifications.
The title this news site gave the article in the opening post is a mistake. The term people power in the Philippines goes back the the peaceful overthrow of the Philippine dictator Marcos by mass rallies. The army would not fire on the huge crowds that gathered and his support evaporated. The words “people power” in the title of this article, because of the history of this term in the Philippines, is ill-suited.

Having heard quite a bit of him, he’s big on a lot of the social justice issues (without going over to Marxism, naturally), but he’s still obedient to the Magisterium. Definitely not an Americanist (which is a good thing).

As to bringing the Church closer to the people, well, that’s something the present Pope is concerned about, what with the New Evangelization, with the increasing presence of the Church in new means of communication.

As for humility, well, there is in many cases an excessive clericalism and triumphalism, among both priests, laymen and religious. Perhaps it is a call to avoid that? None of this means that ceremonial, or culturedness is bad. But are we not called to be humble, though we all struggle with it? Is what His Eminence says so bad?

In short, to me he seems not too different from, say, Turkson. Conservative as the Church demands it, liberal likewise as the Church demands. Not an American conservative in the political sense, but then, thank God, what good Churchman is?

Ah, I see the problem now - it ultimately is from an MSM source, the kind that judges Catholics based on American political positions. On that scale, the Pope would be labeled the same way, were he more charismatic.

“not an American conservative in the political sense, but then, thank God, what good Churchman is?”

Well depending on what you mean…but what would generally separate “good churchmen” as you put it from American Conservatives would generally be the idea of social welfare spending.

Without getting too much into it, you believe the only way to be a good churchmen and support the advancement of the underprivileged is through high progressive taxation and direct government redistribution?

I’d be the last person to claim that. I mean that the Church transcends partisan politics; it is political, but without any ideology per se other than Catholic. I should have made myself more clear.
