Benediction, a pair of bronze sculptures by Ralph Helmick, in the Park Street subway station in Boston. To my mind these recall Pope John Paul II’s visit to Boston on October 1, 1979, and his celebration of the Mass in the park just outside the station.
However, I have not been able to find references that establish that connection. The artist and the subway authority say that the sculptures are “nondenominational” and “universal gestures of peace and benediction,” which is perhaps what they must say, since it was publicly funded.
I was there in the park on that blessed day. The crowd was so large that I could not see the Pope at any time, though I could clearly hear his voice on the sound system. (For you young sprouts, in those days, they didn’t have enormous video screens and live feeds as they would have at such an event today.) I got soaked in the rain, like a blessing of holy water from God’s own hand.
The sculpture was commissioned in 1989, roughly 10 years after Pope John Paul II’s visit. I took these photos in 2002. (Notice the conspicuous absence of smartphones, which didn’t roll out until 2007.)
