I need a new bible with the deutrocanon,

At my local Cath book shop I have the choice of:
The Septuagint(I’d like a copy of this old testament)
The Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (1965).
The Jerusalem Bible (1966).
The New American Bible (1970-1983).
The New Jerusalem Bible (1985).
Good News Bible: Catholic Edition… actually I have a copy of this already only it’s quite battered up and used. I got it for a Buck at a second hand shop.
KJV Penguin Classics Edition(in the “new” and Protestant bibles section).

Which is a good one to get, bear in mind I like the KJV most. But I really want to get a very Catholic old testament. I’m leaning towards getting the Septuagint at the moment.

You must get the Douay-Rheims version, especially if you already like the KJV! If your local Catholic bookstore doesn’t carry it, order it online–Baronius Press publishes it, as well as Loreto Publications. The Douay Rheims is the most authoritative and most authentically and thoroughly Catholic version in English we have. It’s notes are 100% Catholic and support Church teaching (while the notes in the NAB and NJB are sometimes problematic and have a liberal slant). The Douay Rheims was translated from the Church’s official version of Scripture, the Vulgate, and compared with the original languages by English Catholics in exile in Douai and Rheims when Catholicism was forbidden in England in the 1600s, and is extremely accurate. Although the archaic language might put off some, it shouldn’t be a problem for you if you already like the KJV. And unlike the KJV, the DR is not translated with a Protestant, anti-Catholic stance.
If you don’t get the Douay Rheims, the next best thing is the RSV-Catholic edition. Avoid the KJV, NJB, Good News Bible.

Hi colliric,

I bought the Australian Catholic Good News Bible last week, and I am thoroughly enjoying reading it at the moment.

I have never owned a bible, only one I had in high school, which wasn’t a Catholic version (even though I went to a Catholic school - go figure!).

But as Anima Christi said, and I have heard lots of others here say, the Douay-Rheims version is the best.

(see my comments in dark red) I need a new bible with the deutrocanon,

At my local Cath book shop I have the choice of:
The Septuagint(I’d like a copy of this old testament)
The Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (1965). good one

The Jerusalem Bible (1966). good one (except for Luke 1:28, but that’s just me)

The New American Bible -](1970-1983)./-]
a better one would be the revised Psalms and New Testament (2000, 2002) (and I don’t like Luke 1:28 in this one either)

-]The New Jerusalem Bible (1985)/-]. :nope: It has inclusive language

-]Good News Bible: Catholic Edition/-]… actually I have a copy of this already only it’s quite battered up and used. I got it for a Buck at a second hand shop. Sorry to disappoint, but this is a mere “paraphrase” rather than a “translation” so it’s not a good Catholic bible. I know why they had that “Good News Bible” at the second hand shop and why it only costed a buck.

-]KJV Penguin Classics Edition(in the “new” and Protestant bibles section)./-]

I like the RSV-CE and RSV-2nd CE! But my favorite is the Douay-Rheims Bible, especially for Luke 1:28 and Genesis 3:15! If you like the KJV then you will like the Douay-Rheims version. Only difference is that the KJV has misinterpretations or wrong translations in it 😦 … not a very good Catholic version because… well… it’s not Catholic.

If you want a good Catholic commentary you should look into the NT Navarre Bible from Scepter Press. It’s a bit pricy and will take up a lot of room on your shelf but I think it’s well worth it. Here is the OT set of the Navarre Bible.

I pray that you find a good Catholic bible. You are in my prayers. :gopray:
