Pics of Novus Ordo - Ad Orientem!

Pictures from the Assumption Day Feast at Assumption Grotto parish in Detroit, Michigan. The Novus Ordo here is celebrated ad orientem, with Latin, Gregorian Chant, and sacred choral music. As expected, this is a huge feast day for us. There were four Masses starting at 6:30am and ending with the big one in the outdoor grotto at 7:00pm. A candlelight procession followed that Mass at around 9:30pm.

And, probably my favorite - in the outdoor Grotto, Fr. Eduard Perrone in the center, elevates the Host. Jesus is truly the center of this picture. Several concelebrants look on, as does Bishop John M. Quinn, Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit.

There had to be several hundred people crammed into the Grotto cemetary for this Mass. In general, people had to be bussed-in all day long due to lack of parking from so many visitors, parishioners, and workers.

I have never personally seen the Novus Ordo Missae celebrated ad orientem. It looks as if they do a good job of it there.
 
Want to bet that Benedict XVI would be thrilled if all priests were so insightful, and not so inciteful?

Are you talking about this prelate? If so, it is Bishop John M. Quinn. He is blessing our new Bernadette and Angel statues. Sorry about any quality problems with pic. I am trying to scale them down without losing anything, but can’t get all adjusted just right.

Incidentally, next to him to the left is Fr. Perrone, the Pastor of Assumption Grotto.

This is Bishop Quinn in a moment of solitude at the Grotto. As about 7 priests distributed the Body and Blood of Christ (by intinction, on the tongue), he knelt in prayer and it just seemed like a nice shot to capture.

I am Eastern Catholic. It is encouraging to see an NO celebrated with such reverence and facing the same way the people face, toward the returning Christ, i.e., toward the East.

Anyway, Great pictures… Got to ask… What type of Camera was used to capture these moments?

I especially like the one with the KoC, the Servers, and the side of multi-color Candles

Speaking from the point of view of one who prefers the Tridentine Latin Mass… This is almost all it would take, for me, to get me to get more out of the Pauline Mass… Latin, Chant, and Ad Orientem. Very nice pictures…thank you for shareing.
 
I received my first Holy Communion from Fr Perrone. It was 24 years ago but I will never forget him. I keep meaning to get down to the Grotto for Mass and say hi to him…

Lux_Et_Veritas, not being rude, but the Novus Ordo altar (the more ‘table’ like one) blocks the view of the celebrant at the High Altar somewhat - may I ask why you have the ‘table’ altar if you celebrate at the High Altar? Is it so you can cater for people who prefer the priest facing the people?

By the way, the High Altar is so, so beautiful… if I become a priest I’m coming over to the USA to get measurements and photos of that altar and building ones like it in my churches in the UK (I would include the more ‘table’ like altar as well so others can enjoy the priest facing the people as well).

You may want to read Fr. Perrone’s Mass Talk on Architecture (link below). Now, he only has a small statement about the center altar, which we use at the low Mass, but still ad orientem.

This altar, I believe was installed long before him. Here is what he says of it in the Mass talk.

I return to the sanctuary area here and mention first the altar. Of course, we have two altars at this time, the one nearer to you was added in more recent years to conform to the liturgical trend of having Mass towards the congregation. I’ll say more about that topic in another sermon and move on to speak of the altar itself.

What he says about the altar alone - pertaining to any altar is well worth reading.

I think it would do it for many people. Whle I would love to assist in a TLM, I’m satisfied with the Novus Ordo done the way it ought to be!
