Ordinations in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite took place in England for the first time in decades on Saturday.

Very beautiful service it seems. I’ve been to a OF Ordination of a teacher/professor of mine from High School (he was only a seminarian who had taken his initial vows when he taught us), and it wasn’t terribly different from this. Other than the vestments and of course the orientation of the altar it doesn’t seem at first glace much changed between the EF and OF of the ordination rite.

Does anybody know the reason why the Bishop’s cape (sorry, i dont know the proper term) is so long?

Also, what is the significance of the hands being bound together after the palms are anointed?
