Benedictus:
I agree that the entire 2,000 year liturgical tradition of the Church, both in the East and in the West, has been silly.

P.S. The priest isn’t talking to the wall. He’s praying to the Father on our behalf. He is our leader; he leads us to Christ, who will rise from the East.

As our Holy Father Benedict wrote:
There is no proof that the Tridentine Mass (which dates from the 1500’s) is similiar to the Mass celebrated in the early church. Quite the opposite actually. The Pauline Mass would seem far closer to what was celebrated at the begining of the Church.

I don’t claim that the Tridentine Mass is almost the same as the Liturgy used by the early Christians, but I do deny that the Pauline Mass is somehow much more faithful to their Liturgy. Even if this were true, it’s completely irrelevent to what I wrote. I was writing about the orientation of the priest, not the prayers in the Missal. The fact is that the norm, both in the East and in the West, has been to celebrate the Divine Liturgy ad orientem. No serious liturgist disputes this, even the nutty leftist ones.

That mass is scary…(AHH!!)
I still don’t see the use of the priest talking to the wall instead of the people and the fact that the altar is facing the wrong way…

Podo,
Instead of being sarcastic, why didn’t you ask why the priest was facing away? It is easy to mock that which we don’t understand. This thread was started for people who prefer or like the Tridentine Mass. No one is saying you have to like it.

I personally find some aspects of both forms of the Mass that I like. But there is no arguing that the beauty of the High Mass cannot be surpassed.

The Tridentine Mass (so called) does not “date” from the 1500’s. It was codified in the 1500’s under Pope St. PiusV. You may read the Apostolic Letter Quo Primum, online. This is the form of Mass that in its essentials goes back to a much earlier time. Possibly to the beginning. The Pauline Mass ie Novus Ordo. is a complete Modern confection. Representing A solid break with the organic past. It has more to do with 60’s and 70’s feel good “Hokeyism” than Theocentricity. I hardly think the early Church was gathered around singing “Yaweh the faithful one” while Sister “Snakebite” strums her Guitar. As you can find in any large Urban parish. Many faithful do not understand the TLM the incense, bells, solemn gestures, vestments, Sacred art, etc. What they forget, is that Christianity is an Eastern Religion. It did not spring forth in the decade of the 60’s back in the good ol USA.

Pariah Pirana:
I’ll remind you that the Latin word for “table” is “altar.”
No reminder needed, just to clarify context. By “table” I was reffering to the following;
“Thus, to cite some instances, one would be straying from the straight path were he to wish the altar restored to its primitive tableform; were he to want black excluded as a color for the liturgical vestments; were he to forbid the use of sacred images and statues in Churches; were he to order the crucifix so designed that the divine Redeemer’s body shows no trace of His cruel sufferings; and lastly were he to disdain and reject polyphonic music or singing in parts, even where it conforms to regulations issued by the Holy See.”

He’s facing CHRIST!! Leading his people to CHRIST! (that’s the tabernacle he’s facing in that photo) , front and center, in every Catholic church for centuries (up until the demolition after Vatican II).

“Facing the people” is turning his back on Christ - and making the priest and the people the center of attention, a social hall “Let’s chat” (Protestant theology). The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is US worshipping HIM, not eachother. The Priest, as in the worship in the temple, is the one privileged (sanctified) to stand on “holy ground” (the sanctuary), therefore, the altar rail. A VISIBLE SIGN that we are not the “high priest” who is privileged to enter the “Holy of Holies”. Only the priest can utter the words of consecration and bring God down to us from heaven!

Michael Cumbie, from St. Joseph Communications , Covina, CA has some wonderful tapes about the significance of the Tridentine Mass as compared to temple worship, the Faith of our Fathers.
Every act, every motion, every item is MOST significant.

The bottom picture is Holy Trinity the German Church of Boston which is my Church. It will close on June 30 of this year. It is also the home of hte Indult in Boston. Please pray that we are saved by our new Pope. We have an appeal going now and we hope Pope Benedict XVI will help save this landmark German Church ( the only one in New England) The closing of HT will mean the destruction of the Latin Mass community of Boston as well as the German community. The FSSP has asked permission to take over the pastoral needs of both communities and has been repeatedly turned down. We have no debt yet we are slated to close because of selfish men who can’t tolerate an another order on their turf. We hope that Pope Benedict XVI will find our request worthy of his condideration.
Here is Easter of this year.

Dear Kathy,

This is terribly tragic. What a beautiful church you have! I pray that our Pope Benedict will step in on your church’s behalf, and saves it from being closed. It is much too beautiful to close, indeed, and it is so important to preserve it. It saddens me to think others would want it closed, in fact it is hard for me to fathom it. I cannot imagine why they would think of your church negatively, for Heaven’s sakes. God help us!

Many blessings,

Geraldine

Kathy - this is awful. I’m praying for you and your community.

Give to the Lord the glory due His Name; bring an offering, and come before Him. Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! 1 Chronicles 16: 29

You and your community are in my prayers.

Actually he was looking at the tabernacle (i.e. God) the whole time, just like everyone else.

Oh my…that is so, so beautiful…I can’t get enough of it. I wish my parish had TLM’s more than once a week…I am fortunate we have it every Sunday…but how sweet would it be if we had it every day…my heart and soul lies with the TLM. There is nothing better in my mind…It is my one true love
Sigh, I feel like such a freak… :crying: When I tell people I like the Tridentine Mass. I mean it’s natural to think that the people my age wouldn’t understand, but neither do the adults. They don’t get how I like all the Latin, the Chants, and the incense.
