Pilgrims killed as train derails near Santiago de Compostela, Spain, deadliest crash there since 1972

According to latest reports, 77 people have died, and nearly 150 have been injured, in a train crash in northern Spain, including many pilgrims heading to the city of Santiago de Compostela.

All 13 train carriages carrying 218 passengers plus crew left the tracks and four carriages overturned completely (above) near the city where many Catholics were headed to take part in festivals to celebrate St James, the disciple of Jesus whose remains are said to rest in the cathedral there.

The train driver called prior to the crash saying his speed was too high and he was going to derail.

There have been a bunch of smaller derailments doing on, often with chemical cars releasing. This happened around July 7th.
At least five people are dead and around 40 are unaccounted for in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, after a 73-car train carrying crude oil derailed and crashed, local law enforcement officials said. Tankers exploded, sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky, leveling dozens of homes and buildings and forcing nearly 2,000 people from their homes.

The train had stopped for a crew change Friday night in a station about seven miles from Lac-Megantic, the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway said in a statement. The train’s engineer had “tied down” and checked into a motel.

This is horrible and especially so on the eve of the Feast of St. James.
 
Absolutely tragic.
