The US treatment of the man accused of leaking secret cables to Wikileaks is “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid”, US state department spokesman PJ Crowley has said.

Mr Crowley made the remarks about Bradley Manning to an audience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Nonetheless Bradley Manning is in the right place,” Mr Crowley said.

Private Manning is being held in solitary confinement at a maximum security US military jail.

He is shackled at all times and has been on suicide watch at the Quantico marine base in Virginia.

Mr Crowley was asked whether his comments were on the record and replied: “Sure.”

He could not immediately be reached by the BBC, but he told Foreign Policy website that his remarks were his own.

“What I said was my personal opinion. It does not reflect an official USG policy position. I defer to the Department of Defense regarding the treatment of Bradley Manning.”

President Barack Obama was questioned about whether he agreed with Mr Crowley’s comments at a news conference on Friday.

He responded by saying he had asked the Pentagon directly if the terms of Pte Manning’s confinement were “appropriate” and received assurances that they were.

Mr Obama added that some aspects of Pte Manning’s treatment “has to do with his safety as well”.

Amnesty International has described the treatment of Pte Manning, whose mother is Welsh, as “unnecessarily harsh and punitive” and has called on the British government to intervene.

In a letter released by his lawyers, Pte Manning claims he is routinely stripped each night and his prescription glasses are confiscated, leaving him with limited vision.

Military officials have said this is standard procedure for people deemed a suicide risk.

David House, a spokesman with the Bradley Manning Advocacy Fund, said it was clear there was “no justification for Bradley’s inhumane treatment”.

He went on: “I agree with Mr Crowley that it’s just stupid and unproductive.”

Pte Manning has been charged on 34 counts, including illegally obtaining 250,000 secret US government cables and 380,000 records related to the Iraq war from a military database.

He has also been charged with aiding the enemy, a capital offence, but prosecutors have said they will not seek the death penalty.

He was aware of the consequences of his actions when he committed treason. It is interesting that Manning will likely spend the rest life in jail while Julian Asagne is wined and dined across Europe and treated like a rock star. But then that is the way it usually happens-people like Asagne find the useful idiot like Manning and exploit them for their own personal gain.

And USA responds in a typically aggressive and over-the-top manner.

It’s pretty obvious that the extradition to USA - er I mean Sweden - is linked to Wikileaks and not what he’s actually being charged of.

I think that Manning shouldn’t be surprised that this is what happens if you “threaten the defence of the USA”, but he doesn’t deserve the treatment he’s getting - if Amnesty are involved, I think its a damning reflection of justice. Has he even be charged and given a trial yet?

The US responded in the manner it always respond to to treason. in fact their response is a lot milder than it would be in most countries

Amensty International has little credibiltity with anyone but the far left, What little credibility they had left disapeared when they decided it was a violation of human rights to not allow women to kill their children.

But severe when compared with most Western countries which are democratic. Heck, they openly admit to using torture and treating prisoners like animals.

Source for what you say about Amensty International?

And do you always manage to bring pro-life issues into every thread you post in? 🤷

You are the one who bought up Amnesty International.

*I believe that, if in fact Amnesty International persists in this course of action, individuals and Catholic organizations must withdraw their support, because, in deciding to promote abortion rights, AI has betrayed its mission,” Cardinal Renato Martino, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said in an e-mail interview. *

The abortion policy has already cost Amnesty International the support of one long-time Catholic backer: Jesuit Father Daniel Berrigan.

Manning is a member of the Military. He volunteered to serve , he viloated his oath he broke the law. He is getting what her deserves.

The Pentagon and Obama weighed in and said “meh.” Apparently they are okay with the treatment.

And LOL at asking if he’d been tried yet. Has Maj. Hassan from Ft. Hood been tried yet? This isn’t Judge Judy. You think that happens so quickly?

This will be a long, protracted affair while they gather all the evidence. One of the most serious breaches of US security in a long time isn’t going to be rushed.

Save your sympathy for people who didn;t lie, steal, and put the interest of the country they swore to serve in danger. It is obvious you don’t like the US very much, but that doesn’t make it right for any country to be betrayed like that.

Yes I brought up Amnesty International because it is relevant to this discussion as they’re quoted in the article. Why did you have to mention pro-life? 🤷

I agree that he deserves to be punished for violating the laws of the land, but I have to say that does still means he should be treated humanely.

Thank you for insulting my intelligence with the Judge Judy remark, but despite being the uneducated fool you obviously think I am, I was under the assumption that people are innocent until proven guilty. Jail until trial if they’re a danger to themselves or others yes, but being treated so bad that Amnesty get involved? No excuse for that.

And I do not like USA international policies, no.

.
Because you held up Amnesty as an organization who’s opinion matters. They have no moral credibility. You should be careful to know what an organization you quote stands for.

Technically, I was the one who insulted your intelligence.

And that wasn’t the intent, but merely to point out that trials take a long time. And depending on the crime, bond/bail is not an option. What do you think they do with dangerous criminals who pose threats to themselves, others, and are a flight risk anyway?

Their opinion does matter. The USA have legalised abortion in some areas - does that mean I’m going to disregard the opinion of every American? No. So why should it be the same for Amnesty? They’re not a one-policy group, so while I am disappointed they have taken a pro-choice stance (albeit only recently) I think you’re overreacting to suggest that means they’ve lost all moral standing. I also think you just wanted a reason to mention a pro-life issue.

I said that. But there is a difference between locking people up while awaiting trial, and the treatment Manning has been receiving which has lead to human rights groups raising their voices.

I’ve noticed that the people who loudly defend Bradley do so because they believe he is guilty, they just think that treason is ok.

You are probably right. A lot of Americans think of the United ZStates as an international heavy. In earlier times, he would have, by now, been hanged for what he did.

What would happen if Bradley did hang himself after he made the suicide comment? I am all for the humane treatment of prisoners, but they have the protocol for a reason.

He deserves no more.

The story here is that Obama has approved the treatment of Manning and this State Dept guy is off message. It really isn’t his job to complain about the DoD, especially since he isn’t an expert in prisons or law enforcement.

So far the “groups” rasing their voices is the morality challenged AOI and Mannings lawyer. If you want to be angry be angy at Asange who is basking in the limelight while his stooge pays the price.

I thought that in this country, your innocent until proven guilty in a court of law or whatever the proper venue is? Looks like you’ve already convicted him.
