Plan to stop calls by "forced" prayer?

I’ve been pretty lucky not getting too many telemarketers calling. There is one company though that I get a ton of calls from Since we have a “existing business relationship” and I can not get on the do not call list because of that.

I thought of a way to get them to stop calling me but wonder if it would be wrong to do this.

My idea was to tell the caller I don’t make any financial descisions without prayer first.

For anything over 5.00 I must pray the Our Father. I also would tell them that I do this once for each increment of 5.00 up to 20.00 and then I must kick in a Hail Mary. And so on repeating the process over and over working up to a Rosary at the 30.00 level.

I also need the person requesting the financial commitment to pray it all with me. And must be assured that the company is not involved with anything against my faith.

Is this okay to do? I don’t think I will get anyone to do this, but if they do it with me I am prepared to go ahead with the purchase.

Is it wrong to do this?

Actually I believe that the company should have its own internal do not call list. Even if you have an “existing business relationship” with them you should be able to tell them to stop calling you unless it is something about your existing relationship with them.

This is what I did with a credit card company I did business with in the past. Tell them if they do not wish to do this then you will end your “existing business relationship” with them.

Other than that just do what I do/have done, when they start their pitch just say, “I am not interested” and hang up. Do not wait for them to pause to do this, just talk over them.

I would not use prayer (or the threat of prayer), which is something sacred, in this manner.

It’s a lot nicer than what I do. I just hang up.

That’s great! Let me know how it goes.
When telemarketers call us, I just give the phone to my son, who’s 22 months old and just starting to exercise his ability to talk. He loves talking to them with his jibberish mixed in with an audible word every now and then. It’s hilarious! 😃

I like that one!

I’m waiting for the phone call, usually they call by now. The other thought I had was to put on relevant radio reall loud in the backround and just keep the phone close to the speaker.

I don’t see anything wrong with it. Any time spent in prayer seems to me to be a good thing!

I screen all my calls, so I never have to deal with annoying sales pitches (a redundancy, I know). My answering machine has a glitch of some sort in it that allows me to hear the person on the other end of the line while my outgoing message is playing, which makes it even more helpful. I know immediately if it is an automated message because they always start playing before the beep. With those, I simply pick up and hang up before the beep.
I have also had the privilege of hearing sales people make complete fools of themselves by talking during the outgoing message (you would not believe some of the things they talk about to other salespeople when they think you can’t hear them!!). I don’t pick up and hang up on the live callers; I just delete the message as soon as it is recorded.

Everyone that I might like to talk to knows if they speak during the outgoing message I will hear them and pick up instead of them having to wait until the end of the message. It’s really a great system. I don’t have caller ID, so this is the best way I have of knowing who’s calling before I pick up.

Caller ID is your friend.
I have to pick it up because they call on other matters and I never know why they are calling, so good idea, but I might be missing a call I want that way.

Go with your first idea. That one made me laugh so hard I about fell over. 😃

They finally called when I opened this up again!

After I got to the part where I mentioned the word Rosary she hung up…

I think she was giving it thought or she was unsure how to respond!

First time ever a telemarketer hung up on me!😃

I started my business 26 years ago by going door to door to businesses , picking up a business card and calling back in a few days to try and get an apt. I HATED it but it worked. Becuase of that i am very sympathetic with telemarketers. I wait for them to take a breath and then firmly , but nicely, say" i appreciate you taking the time to call me but i am not interested. " Then I hang up.

One time the guy immediatley called me back and said “you hurted my ear” Needless to say at that point it was no more nice guy!

One point goes to the annoyed civilian. :dancing:
Telemarketer has none.

I’ll have to try a tactic like that if my son is not around to pass the phone to, instead of just hanging up on them. 😛

Buy an answer machine and save yourself from tying yourself up in knots with ‘schemes’.

I’ve worked as a telemarketer. Don’t you think they have enough problems to deal with with all the outright abuse they get without the shenanigans listed above? If you’re not interested just save everyone time and headaches by saying so politely and briefly and hanging up. For all you know they’re calling back purposely to annoy you BECAUSE you made some smartaleck response to them. I never did that because I’m nice - not everyone is.

If you’re getting a lot of calls from the same company don’t waste time getting irate at the caller - they are so low down on the pecking order they aren’t worth wasting the breath on. Just ask to speak to their supervisor or manager and tell them you don’t want any further marketing calls from the company.

Why don’t companies invest in mailings versus annoying phone calls that interrupt your family time? If I’m interested, I’ll call you. 👍

The problem is that most telemarketers don’t say “oh, I’m sorry, have a nice day” when you tell them that you are not interested. Instead, they try to keep on talking because they know that we’ve all been told that it is not polite to hang up on somebody when they are talking. They try to use polite behavior against us. So, I just say “thank you, I am not interested, please do not call here again” and hang up before they have time to respond.

Damascus, I like your idea! Try it and let us know how it works! I wonder if you’ll get anyone to say the rosary with you?!🙂

They call me a lot because their product line changes often. So, they think they are being helpful when they call.

I dont like hanging up with them since I get some important stuff from them and am worried they will screw up my orders if I am mean.

The first few calls I got I told them I had money issues, so thanks but no thanks. I told them to take me off the “product announcement” list until I make the call to them to get info myself.

Somehow none of this stuff gets recorded in my file.

I thought it was a safe way to not get them mad but to get them to stop calling.
