I think when one looks at the racial disparities involved in abortions in the USA, it is a disservice to water it down and call it an atrocity. One need not call it a holocaust but it isn’t rare for black pro-lifers to call it genocide, PP clinics in their neighborhoods, proportions out of whack.

And where genocide is conjured up; other like events in history will be too.

Some people will say Margaret Sanger influenced the eugenics of the third reich. Just look it up for oneself. “Margaret Sanger influenced Hitler”. There may be something to this, now, does that make the eugenics driven final solution an apt comparison? I’ve read that, it sounds like one of those things you wonder if it is true. I found sources readily. I’m just not going to post possible questionable or obscure websites.

I must have seen a hundred World War II movies with Nazis in them, I’m sorry, our culture has also made them them villains in history. It’s in our culture. Goodwin’s law and all of that. I don’t see how we then, shut that out of the abortion debate.

If it offends some people to use the “H” word, I respect that and it’s not the only term in my vocabulary.

Now, let’s get this straight, using the “H” word is intellectually lazy; but others are making ad hom attacks? Got it!

And my original point too, reading the article, the “H” word is not in it, so, the “H” word does not need to even be discussed… but if one is saying references to Dachau are now off the table as well, I don’t agree with that reasoning. Millions of others died in World War II.

There are similarities that can be drawn regarding PP and the Nazi’s. Just a few examples: using prisoners like the Nazi’s did or tissue from aborted from fetuses for experiments such as creating humanized mice or the like, the convincing that victims are inhumane and taking something so sacred and making it into something so cheap, as the Nazi’s did making soap out of human bodies, and PP personnel who discuss the abortion procedures necessary to harvest organs and body parts or to sell them, or being brainwashed to regard desecration and exploitation of human corpses as “fun” like PP employees who are on video saying…

Ah, but as I noted earlier, historical inaccuracy wasn’t the only reason given when people argued against her comparison. And there are plenty of differences between the Holocaust and abortion. Again, abortion may in fact be a genocide. But there was only one Holocaust.
The Holocaust is the most well known instance of the intentional dehumanization of persons and their deliberate extermination in the world. When someone says “Holocaust”, the immediate association is “evil”.

There are key differences between the Holocaust and legalized abortion. The state is not targeting particular population groups, rounding them up, and killing them for allegedly betraying the people. But there are key similarities as well. There is a deliberate cultural effort to dehumanize unborn children so that they can be destroyed for the greater good, just as the Nazis put out propaganda to dehumanize Jews so they could kill them for the greater good.

This is the comparison being made. I think one can make a case that we should make attempts not to cheapen the Holocaust. But what other event should abortion be compared to that will grab people’s attention? Abortion is not genocide- that is the deliberate extermination of specific groups. It is a massive, silent holocaust that has killed more humans than The Holocaust, and everyone is fine with it. You have to make people realize what they are ok with somehow. So the comparison is not altogether illegitimate imo.

AOC’s comparison was moronic because migrant detention centers have nothing in common with Nazi Concentration Camps other than they both contain(ed) people. Which is why it was insulting to Holocaust survivors.

I know the Holocaust is your professional area of concentration but I don’t see why it must be kept in a box at absolutely all times, only to be discussed in a historical context.

Why it fits:

hol·o·caust
  1. a sacrifice
  2. a thorough destruction involving extensive loss of life especially through fire a nuclear holocaust
  3. usually the Holocaust; the mass slaughter of European civilians and especially Jews by the Nazis during World War II Several members of her family died in the Holocaust.a Holocaust survivor
b. a mass slaughter of people

Why Genocide really doesn’t:

Genocide:

the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group

I suppose you could call it mass murder or liquidation or something but holocaust is a better fit than genocide. But it has the implication of THE Holocaust so it’s use should be sparing and deliberate.

At least the Nazis were aware enough to try and keep their evil a secret. Abortion supporters openly celebrate theirs.

Again, it’s a genocide. It’s not a genocide against the Jews of Europe. It’s not the Holocaust.

Why isn’t referring to it as a genocide sufficient? Why must the Holocaust be invoked?
That’s a good point. It is easier to defend and still carries the same weight. Seems counterproductive to argue about with such an easy solution.

Because it’s not a genocide. We don’t really have a phrase for the random mass extermination of random people.

Genocide refers to specific targeted groups. No particular races, cultures, or political views are deliberately and systematically targeted in abortion. It’s simply the laissez faire murder of inconvenient people helped by the invisible hand of indifference.

Holocaust isn’t perfect either. Might be too late to make a more suitable word.

No it’s not. But it’s less imperfect and I think can be used appropriately without cheapening The Holocaust. IMO.

There’s the Armenian Holocaust (1914-1915 +/-) and the Ukrainian Holocaust (1932-1933) in which 7-14 million Ukrainians died by deliberate starvation on orders from Stalin.

The Nazis also committed abortions in the death camps because the prisoners weren’t allowed to have children.

And this is the point. To insist that comparing abortion with the Holocaust somehow trivializes the Holocaust is actually saying that abortion isn’t such a big deal, like it isn’t in the same league as the Holocaust.

That was magnificent! He plays 8 different roles in that film. ❤️

noun

a great or complete devastation or destruction, especially by fire.

a sacrifice completely consumed by fire; burnt offering.

(usually initial capital letter) the systematic mass slaughter of European Jews in Nazi concentration camps during World War II (usually preceded by the).

any mass slaughter or reckless destruction of life.
Not sure if you just didn’t see it or deliberately avoided it so just to highlight the last definition (in this particular dictionary):
any mass slaughter or reckless destruction of life.
While it can imply fire, it is not necessary. The Nazis didn’t start incinerating their victims until they realized how inefficient their firing squad-mass grave strategy was. Were their actions not a Holocaust until they started using crematoriums?

The Holocaust as a proper noun has a very specific meaning.

And comparison entaIls comparing two things, not declaring them to be identical.
