“Abortion is a travesty,” or “abortion really isn’t nice” just don’t quite capture it. “Abortion is a holocaust” or “abortion is like the Holocaust” capture it quite well.

Using the word holocaust - capitalize it, define it, use it wherever a description of horrendous mass killing of humans is required. The word hasn’t been copyrighted for exclusive use paying royalties like a popular song. The “politically correct” mindset attacks speech for deliberate use furthering an “agenda” - its a tool of propaganda.
The word “propaganda” is another example - its recognized as the tool that shapes a people’s understanding under the Soviet Union and spread to other efforts.
Freedom of Speech, the 1st Amendment, provides protection of our words.
If the “word game” is being played, look for the underlying reason.

Yes, and it’s easy, it can have a political implication at that. I believe in civil discourse, however if one is calling it an “intellectually lazy” argument, it does merit closer examination as why some find it problematic.

One of those pro-life movies or documentaries from some time ago, has used the terminology “concentration camps” or something similar. This topic is probably quite a few years old to equate these places of abortion with such descriptions. It’s in the litereature and maybe it’s been in the literature for 35, 40 years. I don’t know.

You seem to misunderstand the use of the word “propaganda” - it became a household word along with communism in the late 40 - 50s and until the dumbing down of history well developed in the 90s forward (plus geography, writing, bookkeeping, civics, trade-schooling). The “Red Plot” rather morphed into business as usual; the IT age has renewed the role of propaganda being used for a variety of devious intentions.

You’ve just demonstrated that the Holocaust is being used because it makes a splash. This means the victims, survivors, and families are being used, as well.

Ignoring the pleas of Holocaust survivors and historians who’ve spent their entire careers studying the subject suggests that there may be an “underlying reason,” as well.

I believe conservative talk show host (now on the web), Michael Medved may take issue with the use. And I like him quite a bit.

Again though, so a professor objects, what are his political leanings?

Academics do not control the say. This is almost political correctness.

Sometiimes, I’ve seen pictures of cadavers from the death camps on TV, I’ve thought to myself, that’s not really tasteful, maybe it’s even a bit exploitive But, I think in the end, it is up to each individual to decide.

BTW, that picture I saw was actually from a Soviet concentration camp.

I’ve seen pictures of evil from the Japanese occupation of China as well per WWII.

I think describing the evil men can do or inflict on others is what it is about too.

I consider the life of an unborn baby murdered in the womb to be of equal value, no more and no less, to the life of a Holocaust victim. All Catholics agree…right?

I think you will find that all Catholics agree that all unborn babies have equal value to all other people, in principle. It’s just that there are certain individual circumstances that require a more nuanced approach to the issue and therefore we cannot apply this principle to all people. 😉

Hmmm. Seems like a yes or no to me. Their lives are of equal value, or they’re not.

I definitely think the 2 can be compared, holocaust and abortion. I’m just speaking for myself, I understand the sensitivity of the issue, just the way the events of 1915 (and actually 20 years before) are sensitive to Armenians and the examples of course, go on. “Never again” means “never again”.

I was making a joke about those Catholics who are “personally opposed”, but are fine with other people killing their children and speak platitudes as to why they don’t want to impose their morality on others. In other words, they don’t agree with your statement.

Thanks. Have you seen the Cardinal Arinze clip about those folks? He addresses “pro-choice” politicians but it’s equally true of those who vote for such politicians.

Abortion is intentional homicide. And it is committed on a large scale, 60 million and counting. These are uncontestable facts about which there can be no debate.

Biologists agree–the embryo is a human.
Legal scholars agree–the correct term for intentionally taking the life of a human is intentional homicide.
Which part of these simple, uncontestable definitions don’t people understand?

There is no “anti-abortion debate” (your term) unless we consider an argument where one side is 100% wrong a “debate.”

Like there could be a “debate” about whether or not the moon is made of cheese.

"Never Again", what does this refer to? It is invoking the memory from World War II.

So, those against using the term spoken of above, should likewise, be against the use of the term “never again”. at least per some perspectives because it is calling to mind those events of World War II… one would really have to track down who started saying this but all the same. We don’t hear much objection to that term being used.

Genocide Since 1945 Never Again?

After the crimes of the Holocaust became internationally known, the world vowed it would never happen again. But history since 1945 has shown that the international community has stood by, again and again, as genocide unfolds. From Bangladesh to Darfur, humanity is still struggling to end what Winston Churchill once called a "crime without a name."

By Scott Lamb

And it’s a good point to those who have brought it up, I can see the abortion phenomenon as not being exactly “genocide” because it’s not like one specific ethnicity is gone after.
