We have all heard of the billions of dollars paid out by the Church in the recent “scandals.” What we don’t hear much about, are the hundreds or even thousands of good, innocent priests, falsely accused, who were judged guilty and ejected from their vocations.
Last September, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, in his magazine “First Things” wrote an editorial entitled “A Kafkaesque Tale.” It was about a priest, falsely accused and imprisoned fourteen years earlier. The Wall Street Journal’s Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dorothy Rabinowitz published a two part report on the miscarriage of justice in April, 2005.
This September, Father Gordon MacRae will begin his sixteenth year in a prison that makes Gitmo look like a country club. His story can be found on www.GordonMacRae.net.
With the death of Fr. Neuhaus and Avery Cardinal Dulles, Father Gordon has lost his most powerful advocates. Please go on his web site; read his story; write to him. We must not forget him, or all of the other innocent good men.
God bless you,
Kathy Maxwell
