There is a connection between Ignatius and Francis of Assisi that most people don’t know, unless they are Franciscan or Jesuits.

Ignatius did write to his sons. “I want us to do what St. Francis did.”

Whatever the Jesuits do that looks Franciscan, it’s because it was Ignatius’ wish.

I took some courses at St. Bonaventure U (Allegheny) and remember being told by one of the (OFM) profs that St. Ignatius had been a Secular Franciscan.

I’ve been trying to verify this recently but can’t.

They didn’t keep very good records back then. So you may as well save yourself time. Much of what we know about the private lives of these folks is by oral tradition. It would not surprise me if he was. The Secular Franciscan Order has always been the largest and most popular of the Franciscan Orders. You’d be surprised at the famous men and women who have been Franciscans.

Do you know that the only proof that we have that St. Francis of Assisi existed is his final testament, because it’s actually signed by him? There are no baptismal records, either his or his siblings. There are records of the order being approved under his leadership. The Bull of Honorius does not mention Francis. The bones that were found in the grave are presumed to be his. We can’t prove it.

I’m not saying this to discourage belief in Francis. It’s a perfect example of how much of what we know about the saints came to us through tradition, not documents.

This statement by Ignatius is actually found in one of his letters to his sons. Otherwise, it would be oral tradition as well.
