Thanks, but those are not true elective abortions. A miscarriage is an act of nature, and cannot be in the same category as a deliberately planned, elective abortion done by human beings.

Also, when a woman’s life is in danger due to a medical condition, and the condition is treated even though it may INDIRECTLY cause the death of the baby, yes, the Catholic church permits that, but it is because the INTENT is not to kill the baby but to cure an unrelated medical condition.
Exactly. One of the things I have learned in this forum is that precise terminology is vital. Your post is precisely the point I was trying to make. The word “elective” is operative and no one was using it in the discussion. My original post on this thread was an attempt to make just that point.

Shalom

I tend to be very familir with the precise views on abortion of major religious groups because of my involvement in pro-life work…the knowledge comes in handy! 🙂

Orthodox Judaism opposes abortion-on-demand, which means abortion is forbidden for convenience, rape, incest, birth defects, etc

Abortion is allowed for the extremely rare cases where the pregnancy directly threatens the life of the mother, but this is how the civil law also was before Roe v Wade, also.

Sadly, those who support legalized infanticide often try to use the less than 1% of cases that do threaten the life of the mother to try to justify the 99%+ of abortions that are done for reasons not pertaining to saving the life of the mother.
Abortions for rape or incest are even rarer-under 500 a year. One of the tactics of the pro-abortion crowd is to try and force the discussion to concentrate on the very fringe-raoe, incest and life of Mother.

Exactly. My OBGYN (who, btw, is a pro-life Jew on staff of a Catholic hospital so he doesn’t have to do abortions) said that the life of the mother thing is a “red herring” (his words)…he said such cases are very, very rare.

Actually I need to clarify that statement. Our PP DOES NOT CONDONE homosexual unions. He is merely aware of and tolerates one such union. That does not imply that he approves of it. But no way does he support pro-choice.

The author of a previous contribution I replied to stated that ‘homosexual unions were the same as pro-choice’ which I am challenging as wholly incorrect.
Thanks for the clarification. I was hoping that the priest did not condone them

Fair enough. While I disagree with the traditional Jewish position, I respect it and think that it would be a wonderful thing if our laws reflected it! I agree 100% that the pro-abortion folks use a tiny minority of cases in order to maintain the abomination of abortion on demand, and all of us who don’t agree with abortion on demand need to get together rather than fighting each other over the relatively few difficult cases (which are probably not best addressed by legislation).

give me a break…
Jesus never tolerated sin. He told people to “go and sin no more” He never turned a blind eye.

Tolerance is a TERRIBLE word and least when it comes to falsehoods and sin.

I’m speaking about tolerance in general, not sin. Tolerance isn’t always bad and guilt is from Satan unless one knows what specifically they are doing which regards the Holy Spirit to give them guilt.

Does anyone have a list of denoms that are pro-choice???
The vast majority of non-Catholic denominations are pro-choice (or will veil the question in language about “a woman must make this decision with prayer and support from the community” blah blah blah").

Every mainstream denomination has a web site where you can look up the statement of faith, and you can search on various issues.

You will find it eye opening information.

I never understood people who think abortion should automatically be allowed/sought for rape. I understand, as a woman, that rape is a horrible crime. But the unborn baby did not commit the crime, its father did.

One of my closest friends in the homeschool movement is a woman who was conceived in rape. Her birth mother gave her up for adoption, and she was adopted and raised by a very loving, devoutly Catholic family.

Today she is the proud mother of 8 children, all homeschooled, and she is a tremendous credit to her church, her community and everyone who knows her.

The world would have lost much if her birth mother had decided to abort her!

Very true, alas!

Why don’t they put it straight-forwardly so that the people have no doubt in their mind that abortion on demand is a grave sin?

While many chide the United Methodist Church for its abortion stance, they often fail to read the text of the official statement:
We (the UMC) cannot affirm abortion as an acceptable means of birth control, and we unconditionally reject it as a means of gender selection.
We oppose the use of late-term abortion known as dilation and extraction (partial-birth abortion) and call for the end of this practice except when the physical life of the mother is in danger and no other medical procedure is available, or in the case of severe fetal anomalies incompatible with life… We particularly encourage the Church, the government, and social service agencies to support and facilitate the option of adoption. - ¶ 161.K, The United Methodist Book of Discipline
There aren’t many situations where the UMC affirms abortion; physical life of the mother in danger, and severe fetal anomalies incompatible with life is about it.

That’s a pretty strong stance.

Not much of a strong stance at all-they opoose abotion for gender selection and birth control and oppose partial birth abortion unless the Mothers life is in danger. That leaves several hundred thousand abortions year they have no problm with

I wonder how many Catholic women sitting in the pews today actually believe that they are pro-life even though many here would say they are not since they use birth control pills or have an IUD. I would love to know the percentage of Catholic women using birth control not approved by the Catholic Church. Would you label all these Catholic women that use such methods of birth control as pro-choice and non-Catholics ? How often is the CC’s teaching on the subject of birth control discussed at Mass ?

God Bless!

I have to admit that i have heard it from many many churches - and I do tend to travel a lot. I will also admit that a few years ago this was not the case but now it seems that more and more priest are starting to get a back bone and I hear it very often. We most always remember to pray for our priest.

Hear it several times a year in the Parishes I attend. But the question was whether a denomination was pro-choice. Although not a denomination the Church is the staunchest defender of the unborn on the planet
