Please pray for Joseph who has Post-Polio Syndrome

Brothers & Sisters:

I met a 50 year-old gentleman in my class yesterday who has Post-Polio Syndrome. He was formerly able to walk without assistance but now has to use a walker. He’s looking at losing the ability to walk and needing to use a wheelchair as he loses more and more of the muscle control he had regained after he recovered from his original bout with Polio (in 1960-61 - right before the Salk-Sabin Vaccines became available to the general public).

His name is Joseph, and he not only needs our prayers that he be healed from this wretched and life destroying syndrome, he needs our prayers so that he can understand that this suffering can be a participation in the suffering of Christ.

Please, look around your parishes and communities for others who are suffering from Post-Polio Syndrome. This syndrome not only takes away abilities we all take for granted, it takes away the abilities people who recovered from Polio regained at great cost and (often) pain and suffering, and it steals their dignity (“uncovers their nakedness” in O.T. terms).

Please Pray for Joseph.

In Your Divine Mercy, ease his burden and accept his suffering for the purification of his soul. I will pray for Joseph that he adjust to his limitations. I know it is hard. I too have PPS and have to now use a walker part of the time. I got polio from the original salk vaccine and have struggled declining abilities since the mid 80’s. It’s a difficult thing but God knows why and I have long ago accepted it. I hope Joseph can too. I pray he can find a doctor who is familiar with PPS as they are few and far between. And those who don’t know much about it can really mess up when trying to treat it.

We have a woman in our parish who suffers with this and she is an inspiration to all. She lectors from her wheelchair and is very visible in parish activities. I pray that those around Josephs parish community will **all **help to care for him and encourage him as has happened here. It will help everyone to do this. God bless him.

Thank you for your prayer for Joseph. I expected him to be in despair or depressed as another poster here suggested, but he wasn’t. He seemed to understand that the Post Polio Syndrome was a cross he had to bear.

There’s just the knowledge that he’s not only lost what he’s lost, but that he’s going to lose more, and he doesn’t know if he can deal with that, or if his family and friends can either. Aside from Maggie and myself (I don’t have PPS, but another degenerative disorder), I don’t know how many here have lived with that knowledge.

There’s just the knowledge that he’s not only lost what he’s lost, but that he’s going to lose more, and he doesn’t know if he can deal with that, or if his family and friends can either. Joseph’s life is distinctly Christ-like. Jesus knew from all eternity that he was to suffer and die for sinners. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) May Joseph reflect on these words of Christ, and know that we live for the next life, not for this one.

I take it pretty much in stride. God knows the whys and so I trust He will get me through it. A healing would be nice though…I never give up hope one way or the other.
