MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Gunmen kidnapped the Chaldean Catholic archbishop of Mosul on Friday in the northern Iraqi city and killed his driver and two companions, police said.

“He was kidnapped in the al-Nour district in eastern Mosul when he left a church. Gunmen opened fire on the car, killed the other three and kidnapped the archbishop,” said provincial police spokesman Brigadier-General Khaled Abdul Sattar.

Merciful Lord, may Your Divine Will be accomplished even in this most terrible event. Grant us the faith to see that You bring greater good from every evil. Help us as we pray for the Bishop, for those whose lives were lost, and for the troubled spirits who committed this act. We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen.
 
CORRECTION: It was actually Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho who was kidnapped.

Kidnappers in negotiations for release of cleric in Iraq

The Syriac Christian archbishop of Mosul has begun negotiating the release of his Chaldean counterpart kidnapped in the northern Iraqi city, the MISNA news agency reported Saturday.

“We received a telephone call from the kidnappers and have begun negotiations for the release of Monsignor Faraj Rahhu,” Monsignor Baptiste Georges Casmoussa told the Rome-based missionary news agency.

Lord Jesus Christ,

I pray for the safety of archbishop of Mosul. I pray for any/all needs for the archbishop and the kidnappers to be brought to justice.
