That picture really speaks to his humility. The more I read about him, the more I see that we have an unbelievable man of God for a pope.

It’s probably not the time to be posting these videos, but not every ecumenical action is above reproach either. At best, this was an unwise gesture on his part.

Plus there’s an immense difference between respecting Judaism and taking part in their religious ceremonies (especially as a non-Jew).

I disagree. If we Catholics claim to have the fullness of faith to the exclusion of Jewish traditions we are sorely mistaken. There is much truth to be celebrating in the Jewish Tradition. Jesus was a Jew! If he respects the tradition, so do I.

This isn’t really a debatable point, nor is it the point of the thread. But for what its worth, St Thomas, Universal Doctor of the Church, is on my side (among many other popes and Saints):

“…just as it would be a mortal sin now for anyone, in making a profession of faith, to say that Christ is yet to be born, which the fathers of old said devoutly and truthfully; so too it would be a mortal sin now to observe those ceremonies which the fathers of old fulfilled with devotion and fidelity.” (Summa, I-II, q 103, 4)
 
I’ve never been a big fan of Aquintas. But this is what the Catechism says on the matter:
839 “Those who have not yet received the Gospel are related to the People of God in various ways.”

The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.— Romans 9, 10 and 11.

The ceremonies that were given to the Jewish people by God, most notably the Seder in Exodus, are both gifts and calls of God and the can not be revoked. Oh. And it seems with the above posted video, that the current Pope agrees with me.
 
What is Pope Francis’s stand on Liberation Theology? Does anyone know what he has written or said about that?

My friend, that’s your prerogative. This is the constant teaching of the Church though - regardless of one’s level of fandom. The Church has been around for much, much longer than 50 years 👍

For what it’s worth, his Wikipedia entry mentioned that he distanced himself from Liberation Theology pretty early on in his career. So that’s a plus!

What exactly is the constant teaching of the Church in regard to the Pope’s actions in this matter?

That participating in the lighting of a menorah would be, at best, unwise. Especially for a Catholic Cardinal. I’m not sure why this is even slightly controversial on a Catholic forum.

I’m not the one that brought it up, but I did hope to point out that its irrational defense was…well, irrational.

Having said that, I have great hope for Pope Francis’ papacy.
