In our household, we don’t need to assign someone the role of killing dangerous pests – we simply don’t have that many to begin with

As for Oregon’s climate being warmer, Whatevergirl, ask your dh to check out areas of Colorado on the Western Slope (Grand Junction) and south of there (Montrose, Delta, etc). The climate is much warmer in general, yet skiing is still just a drive away. Montrose and Delta are unbelievably beautiful, and if I remember my geography correctly, they are not too far from Telluride and its bluegrass festival. Pueblo and Trinidad get very little snow. Salida, a small town in the mountains, is in what we affectionately call “the banana belt” of Colorado. I lived there one winter and kept asking when it was going to snow… And yet, just a 40 minute drive down the highway and we were at a ski area.

If you do decide to move to that other state, I won’t hold it against you. Just make sure you take your spider repellant with you

***The discussion isn’t over…lol A decision like this, needs to be made jointly…we both want to end up happy. It’s still off in the distance, but before I know it our son will be out of high school…and this thread will still be going on. With no resolution.

I would like to have a decision made by next summer…that will be around the time our son applies to colleges. And before we decide to officially buy a house–we decided to rent here since we were not familiar with Tampa.

Let me tell you about the experience of my family. We are originally from St. Louis. When my father retired, like many retirees, they decided to move to somewhere where the climate was much more to their liking. I mean the American Midwest has very cold winters and very hot and humid summers. After a great deal of consideration, my parents decided where they wanted to move to. They chose…

… Anchorage Alaska.

I discussed this again with hubby tonight. He said Oregon probably over Colorado, he said the weather in Oregon is much milder in certain parts, than Colorado. He then said Arizona? Ugh, I don’t know why he must be in an extremely warm climate.

We discussed New Zealand also…and he is intrigued with that. He then mentioned Buda Pest where his ancestors were raised. I don’t think I’d like to live there, I’d rather be in New Zealand if we decide to ever leave the states. dixieeagle–your description that I relayed to my dh was very convincing, thank you! ***

Budapest is a delightful city, as well, but it can get very cold; we were there in March a few years back and about froze. Also, in most European countries we could get by, with a little French, a little Italian (very little!) but the language in Hungary had us completely flummoxed - and my husband’s family is originally from Eastern Europe! It is a wonderful place to visit, however.

I have been to a variety of places in the U.S., and have been to Canada and the Bahamas…that’s the extent to my adventures. ***

Eh, I saw part of it and I wasn’t really impressed.

Now, if the spiders were the size of dogs…THEN I’d be a little uncomfortable.
But I just deal with spiders so much (UNIQUE TO MY HOUSE DON’T WORRY!! )
It didn’t really scare me

I don’t really know…

But I think it MIGHT be that they sometimes live in Cedar trees. And we have a few of those in our yard.
But I think they get in our HOUSE through places like our storage area door where there’s a HUGE gap underneath. Its just a problem with our house, not the state!! LOL

We have crime here like everywhere else, but its not to the degree that most other places have. Our education system is excellent, but it is set out differently to yours. From around 2yrs old, kids go to kindy or pre-school. At the age of 5, they go to primary school. They spend two years at intermediate around 11 - 12yrs old. Then they go to college/highschool for upto five years. After this they can go to university or get other tertiery education. We have a real mix of people from around the world here, and our native people are called Maoris. We generally follow the European lifestyle of our ancesters from Ireland, Scotland, England and the Slavians etc etc. The South Island is the least populated of the two islands, and probably the most beautiful. I live in Auckland. Our seasons are mild up north and they are opposite to America. We are getting ready for winter. The Catholic church is very much alive and well here in NZ.

I really feel my family and I, while in for a culture shock at first maybe?, would be happy there overall. Not that we are not happy here, but I just think it would be an exciting change. It’s also great to hear about the Catholic Church thriving in NZ…

You know, our priest in his homily yesterday, talked about how the numbers of Catholic priests are rapidly declining in Ireland and Poland. Is the priesthood thriving in NZ? ***
