Hey y’all,

I was going through boxes of old books the other day and came across an orange Gideon pocket New Testament. I always remember these from when I was a Protestant and I would highlight tons of verses that I loved in them. Now I found one that was completely blank! So I thought to myself as I’m working on my Catholic apologetics, that I could use this New Testament, traditionally used by Protestants, to defend the Catholic faith against Protestant ideas!

So now I’m going through apologetics books and looking for different verses and key ideas to highlight in this Bible so that I can have it to carry around and apologeticize!

What verses or anything like that should I highlight or mark up in the New Testament to use???

Thank you so much and God bless!

(BTW I know that it is not a Catholic version and I know that there are Catholic pocket Bible’s out there in circulation but I don’t really care for them because I like the feel and the size of this Gideon NT)

Look in the front of it. If it the King James Version, keep it. The New King James Version is a little softer, more protestant-biased translation, but still OK.

Example? **2 Corinthians 2:10 **

King James Version:
“To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ”

New King James Version:
“Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ”

Priests, being ambassadors for Christ, as Paul was, forgive in persona Christi.

As to the new translation, just how is one supposed to forgive outside of Christ’s presence? To me it is nonsensical.

I just looked that up in the pocket NT and it is the NKJV edition and I don’t understand why they would change person to presence. These are not the same and what does that even mean by presence of Christ?? I will make sure that verses that seem off that I will check them with my Catholic bible.

In my opinion the only verse that speaks to Catholic tradition is:

Matthew 16:18
New International Version (NIV)

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

I think there are many more that speak to Christian unity, but I won’t post 'em since it wasn’t what you asked for.

**Confession James 5:16 **16 Confess your trespasses[sins] to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. NKJV (This is for when they say you don’t have to confess to anyone but God.)

Why you are doing it: James 5:19-20 19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

Why we should look to Christ 2 Cor 5:10 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 11 Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.

@dmar198 Throwing up a wall of scriptures doesn’t show much, or usually help much. He said he was trying to defend the faith against Protestant ideas.

Many of the topics on your list are ideas that Protestants and Catholics have the exact same apologetics on: i.e. the Trinity. There are others that I don’t see as relevant to apologetics at all. There are a couple in there that I think many Protestants have a much stronger stance on than Catholics (alcohol).

The Sacrements I think are a great addition. As some protestant traditions don’t have the same take on them as Catholics (or don’t practice them as regularly). But still, I don’t think he needs to defend baptism, which is on your list, to Protestants. Catholics recognized one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I’m not going to go through everything on your list, but my point was that the main difference is that of papal succession (and the Eucharist would be a good one too, but a Protestant will just say he is speaking metaphorically). Maybe that is an over generalization, but in my mind it is the core of what begins to separate Catholics.

Anyway, I’m not trying to start a fight, I was merely trying to point out the fact that our differences are smaller than some people think. I for one would rather spend my time evangelizing the unbelievers instead of arguing over the details with fellow Christians. In this day in age, we need to be less divided on our differences, and instead united on our commonalities (Christ). Catholic doctrine is that all Christians will go to heaven and that salvation is understood as a gift of grace, received by faith, and lived by works. (Protestants might just have a tougher road in purgatory).

I’ll step aside here as I’m sure this wasn’t the point of the OP’s post, but I felt compelled to reply to you.

The Trinity is not accepted by all Protestants. Examples of non-Trinitarian Protestants include Oneness Pentecostals and Iglesia ni Christo. Jehovah’s Witnesses may or may not be Protestant, depending on how you look at it, but even if they aren’t they do accept the Bible and can be evangelized from those passages.
There are a couple in there that I think many Protestants have a much stronger stance on than Catholics (alcohol).
What do you think of the passages that I posted? If alcohol shouldn’t be consumed then God wouldn’t have recommended it in Deuteronomy 14:26 and Proverbs 31:6.

And if alcohol is intrinsically evil God (and St. Paul) wouldn’t have recommended it even for medicinal purposes, as He did in 1 Tim 5:23. This is because intrinsically evil things shouldn’t even be used for a good purpose, because evil should never be done even so that good may come. (This is why we oppose embryonic stem cell research.) So the fact that wine can be used for medicinal purposes proves that it isn’t intrinsically evil.
I don’t think he needs to defend baptism, which is on your list, to Protestants. Catholics recognized one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
Very many Protestants in the United States don’t recognize baptism as part of the forgiveness of sins. Baptists are the best example of this, and they are the biggest denomination in the U.S., whom Catholics are constantly interacting with.
Anyway, I’m not trying to start a fight, I was merely trying to point out the fact that our differences are smaller than some people think.
Well I appreciate that, and it is noted and praiseworthy. I agree hat we should spend more time evangelizing the unbelievers than evangelizing fellow Christians, but the one does not entirely exclude the other. I would rather have my Christian friends be in perfect communion with the Church Jesus started than have them go through life in a partial and incomplete union, and that shouldn’t stop us from evangelizing the unbelievers, but strengthen it.
In this day in age, we need to be less divided on our differences, and instead united on our commonalities (Christ).
Agreed. 👍
